Jeff Samardzija yielded four hits and four runs (three earned) over 4 2/3 innings Wednesday in the Giants’ loss to the Astros.

He handed out five free passes in addition to his three strikeouts. Samardzija didn’t allow a hit until the third inning when he gave up an infield single to George Springer. Springer got to him again in the fifth, this time taking Samardzija deep for a two-run homer. Samardzija’s command was an issue all day as the right-hander threw just 51 of his 97 pitches for strikes. Wednesday extended Samardzija’s winless streak to six starts. He’ll take an ugly 6.23 ERA into his next outing Tuesday at hitter-friendly Coors Field in Colorado.

Gorkys Hernandez picked up two hits and scored the Giants’ only run Wednesday in a loss to Houston.

Hernandez led off the fourth with a triple to deep center and scored later in the inning on a sac fly by Buster Posey. He added another single in the eighth for his second hit of the day. The 30-year-old has hit a respectable .287 this year while platooning with Gregor Blanco in left field.

Dodgers optioned RHP J.T. Chargois to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Chargois will head to the Pacific Coast League, and the Dodgers are calling up Edward Paredes to take his place on the 25-man roster. This likely has more to do with needing fresh arms than anything Chargois did, although he does now own a 4.76 ERA over 20 games with a 23/12 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 20 games.

Mitch Haniger (wrist) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Athletics.

Haniger will sit wth a contusion in his right wrist, and Jon Andreoli will take his place in the lineup and make his major league debut. Haniger suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch by Trevor Cahill, and is considered day-to-day with x-rays coming back negative. A trip to the disabled list will likely be avoided.

Kyle Gibson issued six hits and three runs over six innings Wednesday in the Twins’ loss to the Tigers.

He logged three strikeouts and one walk over 97 pitches. Gibson gave up a run in the first inning, then held the Tigers in check until the fourth when he served up a two-run shot to Niko Goodrum. Despite a reasonable 4.02 ERA and a career-best 9.32 K/9, the right-hander hasn’t won a start since March 31. He’ll look to get back in the win column Sunday against Cleveland.

Austin Bibens-Dirkx will start on Thursday against the Royals.

Bibens-Dirx was signed to a minor league contract in December, and his contract will be selected from Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday. He appeared in 24 games with the Rangers in 2017, registering a 4.67 ERA, 1.356 WHIP and 38 strikeouts in 69 1/3 innings over 24 appearances for Texas.

Eddie Rosario supplied three hits Wednesday in the Twins’ loss to the Tigers.

Rosario went 3-for-4 on Wednesday while his teammates went a combined 1-for-26 with eight strikeouts. He drove in the Twins’ first and only run with an RBI single in the first inning. Rosario has had an extremely productive month, batting .365 with six homers and 16 RBI over 85 May at-bats.

Niko Goodrum connected on his fifth homer Wednesday in Detroit’s win over the Twins.

Goodrum reached base in three of his four plate appearances in the victory. He clobbered a two-run homer off Kyle Gibson in the fourth inning, walked in the sixth, then doubled and scored in the eighth. The 26-year-old utility had been just one for his last 18 prior to Wednesday’s breakout.
