Nomar Mazara went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and five RBI in total, and the Rangers fended off the White Sox 9-8 on Thursday.

Mazara actually had a pair of big hits in the game, tying it with a two-run single in the third inning before breaking a tie with his three-run shot in the fifth. He's now homered in two straight and has 16, with an impressive 82 RBI -- fifth-most in the American League -- on the year. He's been especially potent in recent days, going 15-for-31 over his last eight games. The tear has his season line up to .260/.336/.440.

Jose Abreu went 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored in Thursday's loss to the Rangers.

Abreu delivered a two-run single in the third inning and tacked on a solo blast in the ninth to pull the Sox within a run. The homer was his second in as many games and his fourth in his last five, giving him 23 homers, 75 RBI and 67 runs scored on the year. The 30-year-old is hitting a robust .294/.346/.522 in 117 games for the rebuilding Sox.

Alex Claudio allowed a run over two innings of work, earning his sixth save Thursday against the White Sox.

Jose Abreu crushed an off-speed offering in the ninth inning to make it a one-run game, but Claudio was able to shut the door to earn the save. He struck out three in his two innings of work. The southpaw isn't a conventional closer type, having struck out just 46 in 65 innings this year, but he's got a strong 2.49 ERA and 1.05 WHIP and has actually recorded 10 strikeouts in his last 5 1/3 innings for good measure. It's not the most lucrative job in the world, saves-wise, but Claudio has a hold on the Rangers' closer gig as things stand, and that's worth something in our game.

Yoan Moncada hit his third home run of the season and scored twice in Thursday's loss to the Rangers.

Moncada tomahawked a ball that looked like it might curve foul, keeping it just inside the right field foul pole for his third dinger of the year. He also walked twice in the loss. The learning curve is steep for the 22-year-old, who's hitting .190/.333/.357 in 25 big league games, but the Sox have all the time in the world to develop their budding star.

Tyson Ross walked six and allowed five runs -- three earned -- in his 4 1/3 innings of work Thursday against the White Sox.

Ross actually issued more walks (6) than he allowed hits (5) in the contest, failing to stick around long enough to qualify for what would have been his fourth win. Instead, he remains 3-2 with an unsightly 7.02 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in nine starts this year. Nobody expected brilliance from the 30-year-old in his return from serious shoulder issues, but there were certainly higher hopes than this for Ross this season. He'll get back at it Tuesday against the Angels.

Dexter Fowler finished 2-for-3 with a triple, three RBI and three runs scored to help the Cardinals come back to beat the Pirates 11-7 on Thursday.

With the Cards trailing by a run in the seventh inning, Fowler ripped a pitch down the right field line that plated two and allowed the speedy outfielder to race around for his sixth triple of the year. He also walked twice in the game, reaching base in four of five plate appearances. It's nothing new for Fowler since his return from the disabled list -- in 10 games, he's now 14-for-31 with five doubles, two triples, a home run, 11 RBI and 11 runs scored. The hot stretch has his overall line up to a passable .262/.363/.489.

Josh Harrison went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run and three runs scored in a loss to the Cardinals on Thursday.

Harrison was able to get just enough of an Adam Wainwright offering, pulling it over the left field wall for a two-run clout in the first inning. The homer was his 13th of the year but just his third since the All-Star break. His production since the break aside, Harrison has been fairly useful for fantasy owners this year, batting .278/.349/.425 with 13 homers and 12 steals overall.
Aug 18 - 2:01 AM

Tommy Pham went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and three runs scored in Thursday's win over the Pirates.

Pham had already extended his hitting streak to nine games before crushing an inside pitch down the left field line for the solo shot in the ninth. The homer was his 15th of the year, giving him 50 RBI and 66 runs scored in 92 games. An absolute revelation and one of the main reasons the Cardinals were able to climb back into playoff contention, the 29-year-old is hitting .312/.402/.502 overall.
