Denard Span (back) is expected to miss at least a few games.

The MRI results on Span's back aren't available yet, but Mark Zuckerman of CSN Washington reports that the outfielder "sounds like guy who accepts he needs some time off," and is "worried this could get worse by playing hurt." Obviously more will be known once the MRI results are in.

Billy Butler went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 10-inning victory against the Yankees.

Butler swatted a game-tying solo home run in the sixth inning against Chasen Shreve. He had been held hitless in his previous three games. The DH is batting a mediocre .250/.315/.373 with seven home runs and 37 RBI to date.
Jul 7 - 10:27 PM

Brett Lawrie went 1-for-4, delivering a home run in the top of the 10th to help the Athletics squeak out a win against the Yankees.

Lawrie was 0-for-3 with three strikeouts coming into his at-bat in the 10th inning, so the home run was a nice way to recover. He's gone yard eight times this season with 37 RBI and a .291/.328/.432 batting line.

Koji Uehara set the Marlins down in 1-2-3 fashion to grab his 20th save as the Red Sox wrapped up a 4-3 win on Tuesday.

Uehara fanned J.T. Realmuto and Conor Gillespie consecutively before getting pinch-hitter Derek Dietrich to ground out to end the game. The veteran closer has strung together eight consecutive scoreless appearances. He's 20-for-22 in save chances overall with a 2.61 ERA and a 34/6 K/BB ratio in 31 innings.

Dan Haren held the Red Sox to one run, but was left with a no-decision as the Marlins dropped Tuesday's game.

The lone run scored in the second inning on Ryan Hanigan's RBI single. Haren scattered six hits and a walk while striking out five. The right-hander hasn't been much of an innings-eater, but has otherwise been strong, as he owns a 3.34 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP and a 76/19 K/BB ratio in 105 innings. Haren makes one final first-half start, at home against the Reds.
Jul 7 - 10:03 PM

Wade Miley looked dominant but faltered late, allowing three runs in 6 2/3 innings, resulting in a no-decision as the Red Sox topped the Marlins on Tuesday.

Miley looked close to unhittable for the first six innings. In the seventh, the Marlins put their first two runners on base and scored a run. After Miley got two outs, he allowed a run-scoring double to Christian Yelich, which ended his night. Overall, the lefty allowed seven hits and two walks while fanning nine. He has been frustratingly inconsistent this season, holding a 4.50 ERA with a 1.44 WHIP and a 71/37 K/BB ratio in 96 innings. Miley will start the second half for the Red Sox in L.A. against the Angels.
Jul 7 - 10:01 PM

Christian Yelich had three hits and extended his hitting streak to nine games in a losing effort Tuesday against the Red Sox.

Yelich plated a run with an RBI single in the third to tie the game at 1-1, then gave the Marlins insurance with an RBI double in the seventh to make it 3-1. The young outfielder has struggled at the plate for most of the season, but may be beginning to put things together. Yelich is hitting .266/.341/.376 with five home runs and 18 RBI.
Jul 7 - 9:58 PM

Xander Bogaerts hit a bases-clearing single in the seventh inning to send the Red Sox to a victory over the Marlins on Tuesday.

Bogaerts finished 2-for-4 with a double on the evening. The bases were loaded with two outs in the seventh inning with the Red Sox trailing by two runs when Bogaerts lined a single to right-center, clearing the bases and giving his team the lead. The 22-year-old has hit safely in all six games in July. In those six games, he's registered multiple hits in four and multiple RBI in three. Bogaerts is hitting .304/.341/.418 with three home runs and 40 RBI on the season.
