Delino DeShields will miss several weeks with a broken cheekbone.

The injury is officially a "non-displaced maxillary sinus fracture" in the left cheek, and DeShields is lucky that the injury was not more severe given its location.

Pirates designated 1B Travis Ishikawa for assignment.

With Friday's acquisition of Ike Davis, Ishikawa became expendable for the Pirates. In a platoon role, he hit .206/.263/.382 with a homer and three RBI in 34 at-bats. With his power potential, he could generate interest from other teams, but may have to work things out at Triple-A before getting another shot in the big leagues.

Ike Davis is in the lineup and batting sixth for his Pirates debut on Saturday.

Davis, who was acquired from the Mets on Friday, is expected to provide much needed power and run production in the middle of the Pirates lineup. If he's available in any fantasy leagues, he's certainly worth the gamble now that his outlook for everyday at-bats has improved.

Rays recalled LHP C.J. Riefenhauser from Triple-A Durham.

The 24-year-old southpaw has posted a 1.17 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 4/1 K/BB ratio through his first 7 2/3 innings at Durham. He's expected to work in middle relief for the Rays.

Eric O'Flaherty (elbow) threw a successful bullpen session in front of Athletics manager Bob Melvin on Saturday.

The A's believe that he could be cleared to face live hitters by the time they return from their next road trip. He remains on track to rejoin the A's bullpen at some point in June, making an already strong bullpen even more dominant.

Pirates optioned C Tony Sanchez to Triple-A Indianapolis.

The 25-year-old backstop acquitted himself well during his brief stay with the Pirates, hitting .333/.333/.389 with four RBI in 18 at-bats. He'll continue to function as organizational depth and will return to the Pirates should they suffer any injuries behind the dish.
Apr 19 - 1:43 PM

Pirates activated C Chris Stewart from the 15-day disabled list.

Stewart is returning from surgery to repair the meniscus in his right knee. He'll function as the primary backup behind starting catcher Russell Martin.
Apr 19 - 1:39 PM

Jason Castro is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Athletics.

It appears to be just a routine day of rest for the young backstop after a night game on Friday. Carlos Corporan will get the call behind the dish and hit eighth against opposing southpaw Scott Kazmir.
