Shawn Kelley (trapezius) is set to begin a rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Syracuse.

Kelley got the go-ahead after a successful simulated appearance on Wednesday. He is scheduled to pitch twice at Syracuse and should then be cleared to return to the Nationals' bullpen. The right-hander has been sidelined since June 17 because of a strained trapezius.

Chase Anderson (oblique) made 25 throws from a mound in a light bullpen session Wednesday.

Anderson said he felt encouraged by the workout and might soon advance to full-intensity throwing. The right-hander has been on the disabled list since late June because of a left oblique strain. He's trending toward a mid-August return to the Brewers' starting rotation.

Yusmeiro Petit is scheduled to make a spot start for the Angels on Saturday in Toronto.

It will essentially be a bullpen game, with Petit expected to cover the first three or four innings. The 32-year-old right-hander holds a strong 2.70 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 59/17 K/BB ratio in 36 relief appearances this season, but he's not stretched out enough to make for an attractive fantasy streaming option.

Yunel Escobar is absent from the Angels' starting lineup on Thursday afternoon against the Indians.

Escobar went 0-for-5 with a strikeout on Wednesday and is batting just .211/.253/.282 in July. Luis Valbuena will start at third base and hit sixth on Thursday at Cleveland.
Jul 27 - 9:59 AM

Ryan Braun is out of the Brewers' starting lineup on Thursday against the Nationals.

It appears to be a routine day of maintenance for the veteran outfielder. Hernan Perez is in left field and Lewis Brinson will play center field in the matinee game at Nationals Park.

Athletics purchased the contract of C Ryan Lavarnway from Triple-A Nashville.

Lavarnway was pushed off the 40-man roster earlier this month, but he's needed now with Josh Phegley (oblique) hitting the disabled list. Lavarnway, 29, is a .197/.257/.315 career hitter in the majors.
Jul 27 - 9:52 AM

Athletics activated RHP Ryan Dull from the 10-day disabled list.

Dull will rejoin the A's bullpen for Thursday afternoon's series finale in Toronto after missing two months with a right knee strain. He had a rough 6.32 ERA in 18 appearances this season before going down with that injury.
Jul 27 - 9:51 AM

Athletics placed C Josh Phegley on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain.

Phegley was a late scratch from the A's starting lineup on Wednesday after experiencing tightness in his left oblique and he's probably going to remain sidelined for the next 3-4 weeks. Ryan Lavarnway has been called up from Triple-A Nashville to provide depth at catcher in Oakland.
