Aaron Sanchez (lat) allowed two runs on three hits with one strikeout over two innings of rehab work in the GCL.

Sanchez was placed on the disabled list with a mild right lat straight on June 14. He's close to a return, though the team has not yet announced whether the 23-year-old right-hander will work in a rotation role or a bullpen role when he's healthy.
Jul 7 - 5:17 PM

Kolten Wong (head) passed a concussion test after suffering a head injury in Tuesday afternoon's contest with the Cubs.

Wong appeared to injure himself making a diving play in the fifth inning. After being lifted in the seventh, he passed the concussion test, though afterward said that he still has a slight headache. The Cubs and Cards are playing a double-header and it's a safe assumption that Wong will sit out the second game here. Matt Carpenter will likely start at second in his place.

Astros manager A.J. Hinch indicated that Luis Valbuena (toe) could see action in this week's Indians series.

Said action will not be coming on Tuesday unless it's as a pinch-hitter, as Valbuena is not listed in the starting lineup. He's now missed two in a row as he nurses a sprained left big toe. The Astros will play the Indians through Thursday.
Jul 7 - 5:00 PM

Chad Qualls (neck) will appear in a game for Double-A Corpus Christi on Tuesday in preparation for his activation from the disabled list.

As a veteran reliever, Qualls won't need a lengthy rehab stint and Tuesday's Double-A appearance could well be the only one he makes before rejoining the big club. He's eligible to return from the disabled list on Friday.
Jul 7 - 4:56 PM

Dustin Pedroia (hamstring) was seen fielding grounders prior to Tuesday's game against the Marlins.

Pedroia was placed on the disabled list on June 25. He's eligible to return on Friday, but the team has not yet announced whether they'll keep him on longer. Logically, given that there would be just three games before the All-Star Break anyway, it might be in the Red Sox best interest to hold him back and simply wait.
Jul 7 - 4:41 PM

Matt Wieters is starting at catcher for the second straight game.

Great sign for Wieters as he works his way back from elbow surgery. To this point, he had been unable to catch in back-to-back games.
Jul 7 - 4:37 PM

David Holmberg will be called up to start on Thursday when the Reds take on the Marlins.

The Reds were rolling with Josh Smith, who struggled in rotation duties and was sent back to Double-A on Monday. Holmberg appeared in seven games (five starts) last year and held a 4.80 ERA and 1.43 WHIP over 30 innings. He's putting up similar numbers in Triple-A this season and should not be relied upon for fantasy purposes.
Jul 7 - 4:31 PM

Denard Span (back) underwent an MRI on Tuesday and is set to see a specialist as he attempts to pinpoint the cause of recent back spasms.

Span's back locked up after a rain delay during Monday's game. He underwent an MRI on Tuesday and will see a back specialist. For now, he should be considered day-to-day. The injury is well-timed, if there is such a thing, as the All-Star Break will afford Span a chunk of rest as he looks to avoid hitting the disabled list.
