Reds manager Bryan Price said that Joey Votto has looked "spry" this spring.

John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer adds that Votto "looks to have more energy, more pep in his step" and is "driving the ball with authority." It's worth noting, though, that Votto has played nine innings in a Cactus League contest just once this spring. After being limited to 62 games in 2014 due to a distal quad strain, the first baseman has looked healthy this March and could be poised for a bounce-back season.

Yankees optioned RHP Bryan Mitchell to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre; re-assigned RHP Kyle Davies to minor league camp.

Mitchell allowed six runs over 7 1/3 frames this spring. He'll now be part of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre rotation.

Yankees released RHP Scott Baker.

They're hoping to re-sign him, but Baker is now free to negotiate with any team. The righty holds a 7.84 ERA this spring, but it's come along with a nice 10/0 K/BB ratio over 10 1/3 innings. He won't be out of work long.

Christian Vazquez (elbow) will receive a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday.

Vazquez said said Saturday that the first MRI "found something" in his right elbow. The Red Sox have offered no details, which probably isn't a good sign. We should find out after Wednesday's exam how serious the ailment is.

The Red Sox have named Clay Buchholz their Opening Day starter.

Buchholz will take on the Phillies on April 6 and will be followed by Rick Porcello. The veteran right-hander is coming off a 2014 season that saw him post a 5.34 ERA over 28 starts, but he's been excellent this spring with an 18/3 K/BB ratio over 15 innings. The Red Sox' rotation is looking pretty shaky heading into the season.
Mar 29 - 10:03 AM

Red Sox manager John Farrell said that Koji Uehara is "not likely" to be ready for Opening Day after feeling more discomfort in his left hamstring during a bullpen session Saturday.

It's not clear at this point how long he might be sidelined, but the veteran reliever has dealt with the hamstring ailment for nearly two weeks now and doesn't seem to be getting much better. Edward Mujica will be the primary closer for the Red Sox until Uehara is ready, although Farrell wouldn't rule out using Junichi Tazawa, Tommy Layne and Alexi Ogando should the matchups present themselves.

Ryan Zimmerman (shoulder) will take batting practice on Sunday.

Zimmerman banged up his left shoulder on a diving attempt Saturday, but there appears to be no concern, as he's expected back in the lineup Monday. The Nationals can't afford any more injuries to their regulars.
Mar 29 - 9:56 AM

Nationals manager Matt Williams admitted Sunday that Jayson Werth (shoulder) being ready for Opening Day would be "a stretch."

It comes as no surprise after Williams revealed recently that Werth still experiences some soreness in his surgically-repaired right shoulder when he tries to hit. The outfielder did have a good session of batting practice Saturday but isn't quite ready for game action yet and is simply running out of time. Werth seems likely to be ready around mid-April if he can avoid setbacks. Tyler Moore should see most of the at-bats in left field until Werth returns.
