Orioles prospect OF Dariel Alvarez slugged a pair of solo home runs on Thursday for Triple-A Norfolk.

Alvarez now has six long balls on the season, but he’s batting just .237/.267/.371 with a 2.1% walk rate in 195 plate appearances. The 26-year-old was signed by Baltimore out of Cuba in 2013 and performed well last season in his first full stateside campaign, posting a .306/.330/.472 batting line with 15 home runs and 37 doubles in 564 plate appearances between the Double- and Triple-A levels. Alvarez should make his big league debut with Orioles at some point this season, but he’ll first need to right the ship in Triple-A.

Johnny Cueto (elbow) will not be ready to start on Sunday against the Nationals as hoped.

It doesn't appear that Cueto has had another setback, but rather the Reds just want to give him some more time. They're hoping he'll be ready to take the ball sometime during the series with the Phillies that begins next Tuesday. Michael Lorenzen will start Sunday.

Charlie Blackmon is not in the Rockies' lineup Friday.

It's just a day of rest. Brandon Barnes is in center field with Blackmon on the bench.
May 29 - 3:40 PM

Rockies prospect 2B Forrest Wall went 2-for-4 with his fifth home run of the season on Thursday for Low-A Asheville.

The No. 35 overall pick in last year’s draft is off to a strong start in his full-season debut, batting .264/.345/.472 through 43 games in the South Atlantic League. The 19-year-old second baseman also has a handful of doubles and triples to go along with his five dingers, giving him a .208 ISO for the season, while his 10.1 percent walk rate has enabled him to swipe seven bags in 11 attempts. Wall is viewed of the better second-base prospects in the minor leagues, standing out for his plus speed and offensive potential, and the fact that he’ll play half his games at Coors Field makes even more attractive from a fantasy perspective.

Dillon Gee (groin) is slated to rejoin the Mets' rotation on Wednesday in San Diego.

The club plans to operate with a six-man rotation for a while. Gee has been out since early May with a strained groin but got through a couple rehab starts with no issues. He holds a 3.86 ERA and 1.35 WHIP over five starts this season.

Marlins claimed RHP Chad Smith off waivers from the Angels; optioned him to Triple-A New Orleans.

It's the fourth different organization he's been in since February. Smith will give the Marlins relief depth on the farm.
May 29 - 3:24 PM

Rockies prospect SS/2B Trevor Story went 2-for-5 with a solo home run on Thursday for Double-A New Britain.

The dinger was Story’s seventh of the season, while the multi-hit performance raised his overall batting line to .321/.413/.564 through 44 games. The 22-year-old also has 13 doubles, nine steals and 30 RBI on the season, and he’s lowered his strikeout rate to 26.5 percent after fanning at a 31.1 percent clip in 2014. Story began to resuscitate his prospect stock last season after a dismal 2013 campaign, but this year’s he’s re-established himself as one of the more productive middle-infield prospects in the minor leagues. Story is making a strong case for a call-up later in the season, and he could even receive an extended look at shortstop should the Rockies decide to trade Troy Tulowitzki.

Brandon Phillips (toe) remained out of the Reds' lineup Friday.

Phillips hasn't started since aggravating a turf toe injury on Monday. He should again be available off the bench but it's unclear when he'll return to the lineup. Skip Schumaker is at second base Friday.
