Orioles re-signed INF Chris Johnson to a minor league contract.

Johnson was just released earlier this week, but the expectation was that the Orioles would try to bring him back. The 32-year-old will provide some veteran insurance at Triple-A, and play for his father, Ron Johnson.

Shawn Tolleson (back) will likely begin the season on the disabled list.

Tolleson has been slowed by back issues this spring and just doesn't have enough time to get ready for the season. The competition to take his spot in the bullpen is wide open, with Jumbo Diaz and Chase Whitley among the possible alternatives.

Rays optioned RHP Ryan Garton to Triple-A Durham.

Garton appeared in 37 games with the Rays last season while putting up a 4.35 ERA and 33/11 K/BB ratio over 39 1/3 innings. The 27-year-old should make it back to the majors before long.

Jesus Sucre has secured a spot on the Rays' Opening Day roster.

That was already the expectation, but the Rays made it official Wednesday by sending down Curt Casali and Luke Maile. Sucre should be the backup to Derek Norris (at least until Wilson Ramos is ready to catch), so there's no fantasy appeal here. He owns a .522 OPS over 264 plate appearances in the majors.

Rays optioned C Curt Casali to Triple-A Durham; reassigned LHP Justin Marks, RHP Diego Moreno, C Michael McKenry, and OF Shane Peterson to minor league camp.

This means that Jesus Sucre will make the Opening Day roster as a backup to the recently-signed Derek Norris. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times recently speculated that the Rays could try to trade Casali, but he currently projects to serve as catching depth at Triple-A.

Astros manager A.J. Hinch announced Wednesday that Alex Bregman will hit second to begin the year.

That's music to fantasy owners' ears. While Bregman started out slow after his call-up last year, he turned things around in dramatic fashion down the stretch and finished with a .791 OPS. He has serious breakout potential in 2017. The Astros are going with George Springer, Bregman, Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, and Carlos Beltran with the top five spots in the order.

David Price (elbow) will make about 30 throws from 75 to 90 feet on Wednesday.

While it's unclear when Price will be able to get back on a mound, he's continuing to make progress with his ailing elbow. As of now, the expectation is that the southpaw will miss at least the first month of the season, but it's hard to truly say how long his absence will be until he starts throwing with more intensity and tests himself in game action.

Josh Rutledge (hamstring) is expected to begin the season on the disabled list.

Rutledge went down Tuesday with a left hamstring strain and Red Sox manager John Farrell acknowledged that he will "need some time." Marco Hernandez and Steve Selsky are the candidates to take his spot on the Opening Day roster.
