Matt McBride hit a solo home run, his second of the spring, in Saturday's Cactus League loss to the Cubs.

McBride hit the shot off Cubs reliever Jason Marquis. The outfielder now has two homers and seven RBI in Cactus League play, batting .262 in 42 at-bats. He may still get sent out when the Rockies cut their roster down, but he hasn't hurt his cause with his showing this spring.

Jake Arrieta threw four scoreless innings, striking out five, in a win over the Rockies Saturday.

Arrieta gave up just three hits and didn't walk a batter in the outing. He also did damage at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI. Arrieta's spring ERA is 3.86 and he's struck out 15 batters in 14 innings. He's no longer the Cubs' ace with Jon Lester in town, but Arrieta is still one of the best starters in the National League as 2015 begins.

Jon Gray allowed seven runs -- six earned -- while recording just two outs in a loss to the Cubs in Cactus League play Saturday.

Gray actually had a decent beginning, with Anthony Rizzo reaching on an error and Matt Szczur striking out, but things fell apart after a Kris Bryant double. The big blow was a three-run homer from Jake Arrieta, the Cubs' starting pitcher. It was definitely a setback, but the final line looked worse than the outing actually was. Still, the rough showing may deter the Rockies from taking Gray north as a member of their starting rotation next week.

Jose Quintana pitched well on Saturday, limiting the Athletics to two runs (one earned) over six innings.

A throwing error by second baseman Emilio Bonifacio helped the Athletics score twice in the first inning. Quintana settled down from there, allowing six hits overall while walking none and striking out five. He looks ready for the regular season, owning a 2.91 ERA with a 16/3 K/BB ratio over 21 2/3 innings in the Cactus League.
Mar 28 - 7:52 PM

Scott Kazmir was terrific in Saturday's start against the White Sox, tossing 5 1/3 scoreless innings.

Kazmir relented only two hits and two walks while striking out four in the outing. He's been nearly unhittable in three starts spanning 12 innings so far this spring, yielding just one run on six hits and four walks with 14 strikeouts. The lefty delivered for the A's last season, finishing with a 3.55 ERA in 190 1/3 innings and could have significant fantasy value if he can repeat the performance this year.
Mar 28 - 7:49 PM

Jarrod Parker (elbow) threw 20 pitches, hitting 92 miles per hour, in a simulated game Saturday.

Parker and Athletics manager Bob Melvin seemed very pleased with the outing. Parker is aiming for a mid-season return from Tommy John surgery.
Mar 28 - 7:47 PM

Billy Burns went 4-for-5 with three runs scored in Saturday's Cactus League match-up with the White Sox.

It marked his seventh multi-hit game of the spring. The performance brought his average up to .381 (24-for-63). He was caught stealing, lowering his success rate to 66.7% (4-for-6). If he winds up on the Athletics' bench, he could rack up the steals very quickly, giving him some limited fantasy value.

Royals released INF Ryan Roberts.

Roberts was in camp trying to make the team as a non-roster invitee, but the infielder batted just .219/.265/.313 in Cactus League play. He was granted his release by the club, and he'll look for another opportunity elsewhere.
