FOX Sports' Mike Garafolo reports the NFL and NFLPA recently began formal talks to raise marijuana test levels.

Currently, the NFL's threshold of THC levels to trigger a positive marijuana test is 15 nanograms per milliliter. The NFL got that number from the World Anti-Doping Agency a few years ago, but WADA raised its level to 150 ng/ml last summer. MLB's threshold is 50 ng/ml. Just as Ray Rice's case forced the NFL to stiffen penalties against domestic violence, Josh Gordon's will likely be the one that gets the NFL to soften its stance against marijuana.

ESPN Titans reporter Paul Kuharsky believes it "feels like" OLB Akeem Ayers will be a backup rather than a key contributor off the edge in the new 3-4 defense.

If so, it's a big disappointment. Ayers would seem to fit this scheme perfectly. He's 6'3/253 with good speed and the ability to cover and get after the quarterback. It's possible Ayers may not be the same player after undergoing two separate knee operations on his patellar tendons in the offseason. Derrick Morgan, Kam Wimbley, and Shaun Phillips are ahed on the depth chart.

NFL Network's Kimberly Jones reports "it's likely, but not certain" the Giants will use their short-term injured reserve spot on LG Geoff Schwartz (toe).

If so, Schwartz would be out until Week 9. Not good. Schwartz doesn't need surgery and was just classified as week-to-week by the team earlier this week. Reports on Schwartz's timetable have been all over the map. The Giants need him badly. We can't see them using the short-term I.R. spot on Schwartz if he's going to be healthy well before November. He's their best lineman.

Bucs waived CB Marc Anthony, FB Lonnie Pryor, CB Keith Lewis, DE T.J. Fatinikun, CB Kip Edwards, LB Nate Askew, and LB Ka'Lial Glaud.

Tampa Bay has begun the process of trimming its roster to the 53-man limit.

Coach Marvin Lewis chalked up Jeremy Hill's 26 touches in the preseason finale to learning "what it's like to be an NFL running back."

"When we get to Sundays and we go down to 46 guys, and if he’s going to be the guy, then he’s going to have to be able to shoulder the load," said Lewis. "They were good snaps for him to learn with tonight." There was some speculation that Hill was getting so much work because he's down the depth chart a bit. We don't see it that way. Fully expect Hill to open as Gio Bernard's complement.

ESPN Dolphins reporter James Walker doesn't expected Daniel Thomas to make the 53-man roster.

Thomas made his preseason debut Thursday, rushing 13 times for 38 yards (2.9 YPC) and one touchdown. He simply hasn't done enough this summer to earn a roster spot. Walker expects the Dolphins to keep just three running backs, Lamar Miller, Knowshown Moreno, and UDFA Damien Williams.

Jaguars C Mike Brewster is in danger of not making the 53-man roster.

Brewster was the odds-on favorite to win the starting job heading into camp, but he was horrible in preseason action. He botched three shotgun snaps, with one coming Thursday night and resulting in a 14-yard loss. Brewster was pulled from the starting lineup two weeks ago. The Jags are still trying to sort the position out. Jacques McClendon and Luke Bowanko are the contenders.

Rueben Randle admitted he and Eli Manning continue to struggle with timing and aren't on the same page.

Coach Tom Coughlin called an incompletion between Manning and Randle the worst play of the Giants' preseason finale, saying "There is no place for that." Randle and Eli struggled with their communication last season. Now it's timing. It's been going on all summer in practice, and Randle admits he needs to get his head around faster. Randle will be a boom-or-bust WR3 early on.
