Shin-Soo Choo was sent home on Thursday due to an upper respiratory infection and flu-like symptoms.

He should be fine in a day or two. Choo is also working his way back from elbow and ankle surgeries but is expected to be fine for Opening Day.

Bobby Parnell (elbow) is slated to appear in a "B" game on March 10.

It will be his first game action since last April's Tommy John surgery. Parnell is slated to miss the first month of the season for the Mets but should eventually slide into a setup role.

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Thursday that Alex Colome is "still very much a factor" for the No. 5 starter spot despite his visa issues.

Colome has yet to report to camp, but he's been throwing at the team's facility in the Dominican Republic. "Colome is getting his work in. We know that. We’ve had communication on that," Cash said. "As I’ve said the whole time, we’d like to have him here. I don’t think it’s fair to punish a guy for being held up, so he’s still very much a factor." Colome is viewed as the favorite for the No. 5 spot, at least until Matt Moore (elbow) return. Nate Karns, Matt Andriese and Burch Smith could get the spot if Colome slips up.

Jeff Samardzija said Thursday that contract extension talks with the White Sox "hasn't even been a topic of conversation."

"We haven't come close to crossing that bridge," Samardzija added. "We're all working on getting the team where we want. That's our main goal." Jeff Samardzija's agent, Mark Rodgers, said last month that his client would consider an extension with the Pale Hose, but it doesn't appear at this point either side is anxious to get negotiations going. Samardzija will make $9.8 million in his final season before free agency.

Royals general manager Dayton Moore said Thursday that the club has yet to make a decision on Brandon Finnegan's role for the 2015 season.

Just a couple weeks ago, Moore indicated that Finnegan would develop in the minors as a starter. That could still be what the Royals end up doing, but the lefty being used in relief in the majors as he was down the stretch last season is apparently an option still being considered. "It's not a decision we have to make right now," Moore said. "We'll just have to see how it all plays out."

Hank Conger (wrist) will start Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees.

Conger missed a couple days with a sore left wrist, but he's fine. He's slated to back up Jason Castro this season.

Jesse Crain (biceps, shoulder) is scheduled to throw live batting practice early next week.

Crain will throw his seventh bullpen session of the spring on Friday and he'll then be ready to face hitters. The veteran right-hander is coming off a missed season due to biceps and shoulder ailments but is aiming to be ready for Opening Day. "It's exciting and I've been feeling really well, but in the meantime, I'm not going to get too high until I get out there," said Crain.

Mariners designated 1B Ji-Man Choi for assignment.

They needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for the return of Edgar Olmos. Choi suffered a fractured right fibula on Wednesday and will be sidelined 4-6 month, so he could clear waivers.
