Chris Stewart (groin) caught a pitching machine on Monday.

Stewart said his strained left groin felt fine, although he admitted that he didn't really push it and won't know much about his status until he does. The backup catcher thinks he'll be ready for Opening Day.

T.J. Rivera went 2-for-3 and hit a three-run homer off the Marlins' Hunter Cervenka on Monday.

Rivera, who served as Puerto Rico's first baseman in the WBC, is expected to have a spot on the Mets as a utilityman, though playing time will be a big issue. Even if the Mets decide to sit Lucas Duda against lefties frequently, Wilmer Flores will also be in the mix at first. Rivera will likely do more pinch-hitting than anything else, at least early on.

Gregory Polanco (shoulder) has yet to resume throwing and won't do so until at least this weekend.

Polanco hasn't played in a few days due to soreness in his left shoulder, which is something that's dealt with off and on for a few years, including during the second half last season. He has been able to hit the last couple days and is receiving treatment. At this point the Pirates don't seem concerned that it's a big deal, but it's certainly something worth tracking.

Justin Bour went 0-for-3 on Monday and is hitting just .200 in 55 at-bats this spring.

Bour does have an 11/9 K/BB ratio, which is pretty nice, but he's has more GIDPs (five) than extra-base hits (four). The Marlins want Bour playing every day this year and he figures to be solid enough against righties, but he needs to hit quite well to justify getting starts at first base versus lefties.

Max Scherzer struck out seven over five innings as the Nationals topped a Mets split-squad 6-0 on Monday.

Scherzer allowed two hits and walked three in an 81-pitch outing. He's all set to take the hill in the Nationals' third game of the regular season despite the late start because of a finger injury.

Koda Glover retired all four Mets he faced to end the Nationals' 6-0 victory on Monday.

Dusty Baker is still auditioning Glover in advance of a possible closing announcement tonight. Glover didn't face any major leaguers today (he finished the game by striking out Tim Tebow). The only time in recent weeks that he has faced major leaguers, he ended up allowing three runs. We don't think that's all that telling -- Glover isn't lacking in the stuff department -- but nothing about Glover finishing a bunch of Grapefruit League games versus scrubs tells us much about whether he's ready to close.

Red Sox optioned OF Steve Selsky to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Selsky made a legitimate run at a bench spot -- socking his fourth home run of the spring on Monday -- but he'll go the minors and provide depth for now. He could get a shot eventually.

Seth Lugo yielded four runs and three homers in 4 1/3 innings Monday in a loss to the Nationals.

Those homers were supplied by a couple of strong hitters in Bryce Harper (two) and Trea Turner, but it was still a bad day for Lugo with the Mets about to decide how they'll set up at the beginning of the season. Most likely, either Lugo or Zack Wheeler will open up as the fifth starter in place of the injured Steven Matz. Lugo seemed like the obvious choice a day ago, but Wheeler performed much better today.
