Wily Peralta pitched six and two-thirds innings of two-run ball and improved to 13-6 as the Brewers defeated the Cardinals on Friday.

Peralta's control was a little shakey, as he walked four to go with his three strikeouts, but he was otherwise solid. He allowed just five hits and did a good job of working efficiently despite the walks, as he had only thrown 97 pitches when he was taken out late in the seventh. The 25-year old holds a 3.52 ERA and a 13-6 record. He'll face the Giants in his next start.

Kyle Hendricks allowed two runs -- one earned -- and four hits over seven innings in beating the Dodgers on Friday.

Hendricks only occasionally touches 90 mph on the gun, but he's been effective so far with his four-pitch mix, going 2-1 with a 2.05 ERA in four starts. We still wouldn't consider him mixed-league material.
Aug 2 - 1:41 AM

Adam Wainwright was crushed to the tune of seven runs over five and a third innings in his loss to the Brewers on Friday.

Ouch. Wainwright allowed nine hits and walked three. The blow that knocked him out was a three-run double by Jonathan Lucroy with one out in the sixth. This start actually marks the second time in his last three outings that Wainwright has given up six or more runs. The Rays scored six against Wainwright two starts ago. Even the best go through the occasional rough patch. Unless word of an injury surfaces, there's no need for concern here. Wainwright boasts a 13-6 record and 2.26 ERA. He'll try to right the ship against the Red Sox in his next start. World Series rematch!
Aug 2 - 1:40 AM

Dan Haren surrendered seven runs -- six earned -- in 4 1/3 innings Friday in a loss to the Cubs.

The Dodgers couldn't come away with Jon Lester or David Price, but they'll be motivated to add a starter at some point during August if Haren continues to get tattooed. He's now lost five straight starts, with his ERA jumping from 3.57 to 4.73.
Aug 2 - 1:39 AM

Starlin Castro went 3-for-5 with a double and three runs scored Friday against the Dodgers.

The slumping Castro had scored a total of two runs in his last 14 games combined and hadn't scored multiple runs in a contest since way back on June 18. He still hasn't homered since June 16.
Aug 2 - 1:37 AM

Tommy Medica went 5-for-5 with two homers, four RBI and four runs scored as the Padres blasted the Braves 10-1 on Friday.

Medica had plenty of time to impress while Yadier Alonso was out and did nothing with it, hitting .217/.265/.261 with no homers in July. As a result, expectations were that Alonso would go back to starting against righties after coming off the DL this week, with Medica merely filling in against lefties. They can play both at the same times on occasion, but putting Medica in the outfield isn't ideal. It'll be interesting to see if the huge game gets Medica a start against Ervin Santana on Saturday or if the Padres simply stick to the plan.
Aug 2 - 1:35 AM

Eric Stults limited the Braves to an unearned run over 6 1/3 inning in a win Friday.

Stults has been an improved pitcher these last six weeks, though without really progressing to the point at which he'd be worth playing in fantasy leagues. He's now 4-13 with a 4.94 ERA on the season.
Aug 2 - 1:30 AM

Mike Minor was tagged for five runs in five innings by the Padres in a loss Friday.

It's Minor's third lousy outing in his last four starts, with the only decent effort coming against the Padres last week. He's actually had a really weak schedule of late, yet his ERA has risen steadily anyway, landing at 5.42 for the moment. The Braves need to seriously consider sending him down in an effort to get him turned around. David Hale could serve as a stopgap starter or Cody Martin could be given an opportunity.
