Carson Palmer said the nerve in his shoulder hasn't progressed as much as he had hoped.

Blake Bortles attempted just three passes of more than 15 yards in Sunday's loss at San Diego.

Bortles was in a tough spot for his first NFL start, so OC Jeff Fisch kept it simple. The No. 3 overall pick was asked to execute a ton of screens, hitches and short passes off bootlegs, which led to a strong 29-of-37 completion rate. But that's not really Bortles' game, as he's an aggressive downfield thrower and playmaker. Expect the chains to be taken off a bit in Week 5, when the Jags have a plus home matchup against a bad and banged up Steelers defense. Bortles will be a fine QB2 with a high floor thanks to his running ability.

Marvin Jones (foot) is expected to make his 2014 debut in Sunday night's game at New England.

We'd keep expectations in check initially as Jones practiced a grand total of one time during the offseason program and training camp. But based on talent alone, he'll pass up Mohamed Sanu quickly for outside receiving duties and become a major red-zone threat. Jones posted a 51-712-10 line last year despite playing on just 50.0 percent of the snaps. "Oh yes, I can't wait," OC Hue Jackson said when asked about Jones' return. "He can run and catch. Not only does he take the top off, he scores a lot of touchdowns, too."

Coach Ron Rivera admitted that "you don't want to unleash" Cam Newton unless he's "ready to be unleashed."

Newton's ankle and rib injuries have sapped what makes him so electric for both the Panthers and fantasy owners -- running ability. Newton is averaging 2.6 rushing attempts per game this season after averaging 7.5 through his first three seasons. "I wish I could say, 'Hey! We're going to cut him loose this week!'" OC Mike Shula said. "I don't want to lie to you.' That's something we're going to talk about this week. It's something we have to monitor every week for sure. But he's getting healthier and ... we'll see." Until Newton starts running again, he'll only be a borderline QB1.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Raiders' first look for their new head coach will be Jon Gruden.

Gruden, the former Raiders head coach and current Monday Night Football color analyst, has been connected to a homecoming ever since leaving the Bucs in 2008. It's obvious he'd be the first choice for close friend and owner Mark Davis. However, there's a lot of doubt if this is the right time for Gruden to go back to Oakland. GM Reggie McKenzie has put together one of the worst teams in the NFL by trading for guys like Matt Flynn/Matt Schaub, drafting guys like D.J. Hayden/Menelik Watson and blowing cap space on washed-up veterans like Maurice Jones-Drew. No coach could make it work with this roster -- not even Spider 2 Y Banana.

Coach Rex Ryan said Eric Decker (hamstring) feels better now than he did at this time last week.

Decker was expected to be limited in Sunday's loss to the Lions, but ended up playing on 77.9 percent of the snaps and emerged with a 4-48-1 line on 10 targets. Most importantly, he made it through without setbacks and should be closer to 100 percent for the Week 5 game at San Diego. Despite the tough matchup, Decker's red-zone ability makes him a weekly WR2 candidate.

Jets FB Tommy Bohanon broke his collarbone in Sunday's Week 4 loss to the Lions.

Bohanon somehow played through the injury for the entire second half before being diagnosed after the game. The 2013 seventh-rounder is a candidate for injured reserve. John "The Terminator" Conner was brought in for a workout Monday.

Following Monday night's loss at Kansas City, coach Bill Belichick scoffed when asked if he'd "evaluate" the quarterback position this week.

Belichick chuckled at the notion, the reaction most people have when asked about benching a legend like Tom Brady in favor of a rookie like Jimmy Garoppolo. It's obviously not going to happen, but the fact that it even has to be asked speaks volumes. Brady has been bad since the beginning of last season, lacking zip on his intermediate throws and showing no accuracy on deep balls. It would be extremely rare for a player to reverse his career arc at age 37.
