A.J. Pollock is getting the day off Thursday against the Reds.

Gregor Blanco will start in center field and bat eighth, with Daniel Descalso taking a turn at leadoff. It's just a routine day of maintenance for Pollock.

J.D. Martinez (hand) is not in the Diamondbacks' starting lineup on Thursday.

Martinez got hit by a pitch Wednesday in his second-ever at-bat with Arizona and suffered a left hand contusion. X-rays turned up negative, so he should be good to go in a day or two. Chris Herrmann is starting in right field and Daniel Descalso is in left field on Thursday afternoon in Cincinnati.

Diamondbacks recalled RHP Matt Koch from Triple-A Reno.

Koch has surrendered 16 earned runs in 17 innings this season at the Triple-A level, and seven runs in 11 innings at High-A. He won't be up in the majors for long.

Diamondbacks placed RHP Taijuan Walker on the paternity leave list.

Patrick Corbin is starting in Walker's place on Thursday afternoon against the Reds. The right-hander should be back with the Diamondbacks sometime this weekend.

According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the Mariners are "fairly close" on a trade for Marlins right-hander David Phelps.

MLB.com's Mark Feinsand was first to report word of the Mariners' growing interest in Phelps late Wednesday night. The 30-year-old reliever hasn't been as effective this season as he was in 2016, but he would still fit nicely into a setup role in Seattle and he is controllable through 2018. It sounds like there could be something official soon, though FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal tweeted early Thursday morning that the Marlins are "not in love" with the offerings in the Mariners' farm system.
Jul 20 - 10:17 AM

Xander Bogaerts (hand) is back in the Red Sox starting lineup Thursday against the Blue Jays.

Bogaerts missed a couple of games with a small sprain of a joint in his right hand. He is starting at shortstop and hitting sixth on Thursday afternoon versus Toronto left-hander Francisco Liriano.
Jul 20 - 10:10 AM

Zack Cozart is absent from the Reds' starting lineup Thursday against the Diamondbacks.

Cozart went 4-for-6 with a home run in Wednesday night's win over Arizona, but Jose Peraza will get the start at shortstop in Thursday afternoon's series finale. Scooter Gennett is at second base.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal confirms that the Mariners are talking to the Marlins about right-hander David Phelps.

Rosenthal adds, however, that there is "no match" at this point and might never be one because the Marlins are "not in love" with the players in the Mariners' minor league system. Phelps, 30, has posted a sharp 2.69 ERA and 11.1 K/9 over his last 133 2/3 innings dating back to the beginning of the 2016 season -- some of that as a starter. He also carries one more year of contractual control in 2018. Miami should be able to get a decent prospect or two in return for him.
