Brandon League (shoulder) threw a bullpen session on Sunday.
It's the first time he's thrown from the bump since being diagnosed with a right shoulder impingement back in March. While League does appear to finally be making strides, it's still going to be a while before he's activated since he's on the 60-day DL.
Padres manager Bud Black said Sunday that it's possible Joaquin Benoit (arm) could go on the disabled list.
Benoit is going through a "dead arm" phase. His status remains day-to-day and even hour-to-hour, as it's possible he could be available as soon as Sunday but also possible he'll be shut down for a couple weeks.
Cubs designated LHP Joseph Ortiz for assignment.
The move cleared space on the 40-man roster for Anthony Varvaro. Ortiz, 24, has a 1/5 K/BB ratio over 10 2/3 relief innings at Triple-A Iowa this season.
Cubs claimed RHP Anthony Varvaro off waivers from the Red Sox.
Varvaro had a rough month for the Red Sox, but his sub-3.00 ERA for his career entering the season pretty much assured him of not passing through waivers unclaimed. He'll report to Triple-A Iowa for now but should get a shot with the big club before long.
Justin Morneau is not in the Rockies' lineup Sunday.
It appears to just be a routine day off. Daniel Descalso is at first base while Morneau sits.
Troy Tulowitzki is not in the Rockies' lineup Sunday.
It looks like he's just getting a breather. Rafael Ynoa is at shortstop Sunday in Tulowitzki's place.
White Sox signed OF Tyler Colvin to a minor league contract.
Colvin refused a minor league assignment after failing to make the Marlins' Opening Day roster, hoping to net a big league deal elsewhere. That didn't happen and he's now resurfaced in the minors with Chicago. He'll probably need an injury or two to get a shot with the Pale Hose.
White Sox released OF Jared Mitchell.
The former first-round pick was just never able to progress as hoped. Now 26, Mitchell was off to a 2-for-40 start at Triple-A Charlotte.
