Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony indicated Saturday that Oswaldo Arcia's (hip) rehab assignment with Triple-A Rochester will not be brief.

Arcia, who has missed 17 games with a right hip flexor strain, will begin the assignment with Rochester on Sunday. "He needs to go down and show he’s ready to come up and help the club," Antony said. "We’ve gotten away from go down, get a couple of at-bats and come back up. All of a sudden the guy is 0-for-12 and not helping the team. A, we need to know that he’s healthy, and B, he needs to look like he’s ready to help us." Arcia was starting to show signs of turning it around at the plate before the injury. Ultimately, he should be back with the Twins pretty soon.

Devin Mesoraco is expected to decide whether to undergo season-ending surgery on his left hip when the Reds return home from their road trip Monday.

Mesoraco experienced continued pain while attempting to squat on Friday and hasn't even been available to serve as a designated hitter the last two days. Being able to catch again this season looks like a long shot, so he could decide soon to go ahead and have the procedure. "I'm sure we'll have some type of meeting," he said. "I don't know what we're going to do. I don't expect to be catching in the near future. We'll talk when we get back to Cincinnati."

Bud Norris (illness) will make another rehab start with Double-A Bowie on Wednesday.

He had been scheduled for just one rehab outing, but plans changed after Norris was drilled for nine runs on 12 hits over 2 2/3 innings for Triple-A Norfolk on Friday. As well as Mike Wright has pitched, Norris might not have a rotation spot waiting for him when he returns.

Rockies optioned RHP David Hale to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Hale pitched well in a spot start Saturday, allowing two earned runs over 6 2/3 innings. That could earn him another shot when the Rockies need another starter.

Rays recalled RHP Preston Guilmet from Triple-A Durham.

Guilmet was claimed off waivers earlier this month. The 27-year-old has posted a 2.04 ERA across 17 2/3 innings in Triple-A this season.

Indians activated C Yan Gomes from the 15-day disabled list.

Gomes wound up missing six weeks out of a projected 6-8 week timetable after he went down with a right MCL sprain. The Indians will not let him catch back-to-back games initially, so Roberto Perez will still see a decent amount of time behind the plate over the next couple weeks.

John Axford collected his sixth save of the year Saturday as the Rockies beat the Giants 5-3 in the second half of a doubleheader at Coors Field.

Axford gave up a leadoff single to Gregor Blanco, but that's all the damage the Giants could muster down two in the ninth. Axford has been pretty steady all season and is now running away with the Rockies' ninth-inning gig. He's obviously a must-own in all standard fantasy leagues, even as the closer on a bad Colorado team.

Yusmeiro Petit allowed four earned runs over six innings Saturday as the Giants dropped the second half of a doubleheader against the Rockies.

Petit hadn't gone more than three innings in any appearance this season as the Giants' most-trusted long reliever, so that he was able to make it through six (on just 81 pitches) was a big help to the Giants' pitching staff as a whole. But the Colorado offense got to him for two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth to split the doubleheader. Petit will head back to the bullpen now.
