Michael Martinez has elected free agency.

Martinez cleared waivers after being designated for assignment on Monday. Because he's been DFA'd twice this year, Martinez could choose between a minor league assignment or becoming a free agent. The 34-year-old is only a .194 career hitter in the big leagues but should be able to latch on as a utility player.

Yasmani Grandal is not in the Dodgers' lineup Thursday against the Mets.

The Dodgers are stacking their lineup with right-handers against Mets lefty Steven Matz. Austin Barnes will start behind the plate and bat seventh. He's catching for left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu.

Carlos Gomez went 3-for-5 with two homers and five RBI in leading the Rangers to an 11-4 win over the Blue Jays on Thursday.

In a tear reminiscent of what J.D. Martinez did earlier this year, Gomez has five homers and 14 RBI in six games since coming off the disabled list. Before getting hurt, he had four homers and 13 RBI in 38 games. The Rangers might want to hit him higher in the order to capitalize on this. He opened the season as a leadoff man, but he's batting sixth right now.

Marcus Stroman was roughed up by the Rangers on Thursday, yielding seven runs and three homers in four innings.

This rates as Stroman's worst start of the year. He came into this one 5-1 with a 2.55 ERA in his previous eight outings, so we wouldn't read too much into it.

Robinson Chirinos hit his ninth homer and doubled twice Thursday against the Blue Jays.

Chirinos had just one double to go along with his eight homers entering the day. He's done really nice work in his part-time role, driving in 22 runs in 92 at-bats, and the Rangers are trying to get him some more playing time now; he DH'd for the first time on Tuesday. If it's the start of a trend to get him more at-bats, he'd be a worthy second catcher in mixed leagues.

Matt Shoemaker (forearm) will head back to Los Angeles to be reevaluated.

Shoemaker was hoping to return to the rotation Sunday against Boston, but obviously that's not happening. He must have overdone it by playing catch on Wednesday. Parker Bridwell will continue to start in his place.

Troy Tulowitzki went 0-for-4 in Thursday's loss and hasn't driven in a run in his last 12 games.

Tulo hit a grand slam in his third game back from the disabled list on May 29. Apart from that, he's collected one RBI in 22 games since his return and two in 31 games if you want to go pre-injury. Even so, Jays manager John Gibbons keeps on batting him fifth or sixth every day. That really needs to change.

Travis Shaw homered, doubled twice and knocked in three runs Thursday as the Brewers beat the Pirates 4-2.

Shaw ruined Ivan Nova's day, collecting all three of his extra-base hits off the Pirates starter. Shaw had great results for the Red Sox the first two months of last year, only to fall off in June and never really pick it back up. This time around, he's avoided the June swoon; he's homered five times in 17 games this month.
