Panthers signed QB Derek Anderson to w two-year contract extension through 2017.

Sep 2 - 1:08 PM

Coach Rex Ryan expressed some doubt whether LeSean McCoy (hamstring) will be ready Week 1.

"I hope," Ryan said. "If not then the next man has to step up. So we will see. If he is not ready to go, he won’t be in there." According to ESPN's Josina Anderson, McCoy is dealing with a "small tear" in the hamstring and "it tore in a spot where it couldn't have been any better." McCoy has done next to nothing at practice the past two weeks, as he's only able to perform light footwork, agility, and cardio. If McCoy can't suit up Week 1, it'll be Karlos Williams, Bryce Brown, and Anthony Dixon, though Williams is recovering from an injury of his own.

Bears acquired TE Khari Lee from the Texans in exchange for a 2017 sixth-round pick.

Lee was an All-American at D-2 Bowie State and signed with the Texans as an undrafted free agent. He didn't impress at his Pro Day, however, displaying subpar athleticism with a 5.05 forty and 9-foot-7 broad jump. Lee caught 5-of-6 preseason targets for 71 scoreless yards. The Bears like him as an inline blocker.

Colts DT Arthur Jones needs surgery to repair torn ligaments in his ankle and could miss the entire season.

Jones may also have joint damage. It sounds pretty serious, and Jones, at best, is expected to miss at least half the season and could even head to injured reserve. After signing Jones to a five-year, $33 million deal last offseason, the Colts have gotten little return on investment. Jones missed half of last season with ankle issues. Zach Kerr and rookie Henry Anderson will have to pick up the slack.

E.J. Manuel is expected to open the season as the Bills' No. 2 quarterback.

He's earned it with a phenomenal preseason. Manuel has completed 20-of-30 passes (66.7 percent) for 358 yards (11.9 YPA) and a 4:0 TD:INT ratio. GM Doug Whaley still "strongly supports" Manuel, whom Whaley picked 16th overall in 2013. Matt Cassel is expected to be released by Saturday afternoon.

Eagles ILB Kiko Alonso is battling tendinitis in his surgically-repaired left knee.

Alonso has yet to play this preseason with the nagging issue in the same knee he tore his ACL last year. He expects to play Thursday night in the preseason finale, but said the same thing last week before bowing out in pre-game warmups. This is more of a day-to-day thing, and Alonso should be ready come Week 1.

Saints CB Keenan Lewis underwent hip surgery Tuesday and will miss 4-6 weeks.

It's a big loss for the Saints after sending third-round CB P.J. Williams to I.R. with a torn hamstring earlier this week. Brandon Browner will have to assume No. 1 cornerback duties the first couple weeks of the season with Delvin Breaux, Stanley Jean-Baptiste, and Damian Swann taking on expanded roles. The Saints get the Cardinals (John Brown) and Bucs (Mike Evans) the first two weeks.

Browns placed OT Michael Bowie on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, ending his season.

Bowie initially hurt his shoulder last August with the Seahawks and was waived/injured, but the Browns claimed him and stashed him on I.R. in hopes of getting a return in 2015. That won't happen, as the shoulder is still a problem. Bowie made nine starts for Seattle in 2013 and excelled as a run blocker.
