Jose Bautista (shoulder) is planning to take batting practice before Monday's game in Boston.

He won't be in the Blue Jays' starting lineup on Monday night, but Bautista does expect to return at some point during this three-game series at Fenway Park. The 34-year-old slugger has been out since last Tuesday with a right shoulder strain. He had four home runs and 10 RBI in 14 games before the injury.

Brewers released RHP Chris Perez.

Perez signed a minor league contract with the Brewers on March 31 but exercised his opt-out Monday after allowing 14 hits and eight earned runs in 7 2/3 innings at Triple-A Colorado Springs. The 29-year-old former All-Star closer will hope for better results with a change of scenery. He posted a 4.27 ERA and 1.36 WHIP across 46 1/3 innings with the Dodgers in 2014.

Nick Franklin (oblique) expects to begin a minor league rehab assignment at some point this week.

Franklin seemed to be trending toward minor league games early last week, but the Rays slowed his rehab as a precautionary measure. The 24-year-old was poised to open the 2015 season as Tampa Bay's starting second baseman before suffering an oblique strain at the end of spring training. He should be ready to rock in early May and may carry some value in deep fantasy leagues.

Carlos Gonzalez believes he's nearly ready to bust out of his early-season offensive slump.

Gonzalez is batting just .197/.229/.364 in 17 games this season, but he went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored on Saturday and slugged his first home run since April 8 on Sunday. "I'm trying to use the whole field," CarGo said Sunday evening. "When I am doing well, I can hit to left with power and line drives into the gap. When I see that coming off my bat, I know that something good is coming."

Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria gave his first public endorsement of manager Mike Redmond on Sunday.

Rumors swirled early last week that Redmond was already on the hot seat, but the Marlins swept the Nationals over the weekend and have rattled off five straight victories. Funny how things change. "He's the manager. Period," Loria told Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. "All teams go through bad moments. Ours came early."

Rays sent 1B Allan Dykstra outright to Triple-A Durham.

Dykstra was designated for assignment by the Rays this weekend to clear a roster spot for James Loney. The 27-year-old passed through waivers unclaimed despite owning an intriguing .856 career minor league OPS. Dykstra should get another shot eventually.

Jose Pirela (concussion) began a rehab assignment Sunday with the High-A Tampa Yankees.

Pirela served as Tampa's designated hitter in his rehab debut and went 0-for-4. The 25-year-old catcher had been on the shelf since March 22 with a bad concussion. He'll head to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre once he's fully healthy and his timing is right.

Alex Colome (illness) tossed six innings of one-run ball Sunday at Triple-A Durham.

Colome yielded only four hits and walked none while striking out six. He threw 45 of his 63 pitches for strikes. The 26-year-old right-hander arrived late to Rays camp this spring due to visa issues and then caught a bad case of pneumonia once he did finally make it to Florida. Colome finally appears ready to join the Tampa Bay rotation and could be worth a look in some deeper fantasy formats.
