Matt Cain allowed two runs - one earned - with seven hits and a walk over seven innings in a loss against the Braves on Friday.

Cain threw 64 of his 92 pitches for strikes while recording three punchouts. After an impressive 2-0 record with a 2.30 ERA in five April starts he has stumbled to a 1-3 mark and 6.59 ERA in five outings in the month of May. Walks have done him in so far in May, as he has 15 walks with just 14 strikeouts across 27 1/3 innings.
May 27 - 2:33 AM

Tyler Flowers finished 2-for-4 with a run scored in Friday's 2-0 win in San Francisco.

Flowers is humming along with a slash line of .351/.465/.447. He is a career .238 hitter so this type of sustained production after nearly two full months is quite the surprise. He continues to split the receiver duties with fellow veteran Kurt Suzuki, so he is still useful only as a No. 2 fantasy option in NL-only play.
May 27 - 2:28 AM

Jim Johnson struck out two batters in a perfect ninth inning in Friday's win in San Francisco.

Johnson secured his 10th save of the season, rebounding from a blown save in his last appearance on Tuesday. He has allowed just three earned runs over his past 12 innings dating back to April 27. Despite an ugly 3.48 ERA for a closer he is a valuable fantasy option. When Atlanta wins they are generally going to be close games needing Johnson to finish it off.
May 27 - 2:10 AM

Jaime Garcia allowed four hits and two walks over 6 2/3 scoreless innings with five strikeouts in Friday's win at San Francisco.

Garcia posted his second straight quality start, but it was his first victory in the month of May. He is 1-2 with a 3.12 ERA across 26 innings over four starts in the month, and he has chopped more than two runs (5.73 to 3.58) off his ERA in seven starts dating back to April 12.
May 27 - 2:05 AM

John Lackey is set to face the Dodgers in Saturday's start in Los Angeles.

Lackey has posted a 1.73 ERA in his career against the Dodgers, lowest against any single opponent. He lost his first appearance against L.A. on April 12, but allowed just one run and four hits with a season-best 10 strikeouts over six innings. Lackey has posted an 8.00 ERA in the first inning this season and a 4.15 ERA from the second inning and after.
May 27 - 1:58 AM

Addison Russell finished hitless in two at-bats with a strikeout on Friday at L.A. Dodgers.

Russell's average continues to plummet, down to just .211. He has collected just nine hits in 64 at-bats since flipping the calendar to May, and his average has slipped from .291 to .211 since April 25. After posting 21 homers and 95 RBI last season with 49 total extra-base hits, he has taken a major step backward in 2017.
May 27 - 1:52 AM

Jake Arrieta allowed four earned runs, five hits and a walk with nine strikeouts over six innings in a loss Friday at L.A. Dodgers.

He has a very un-Arrieta-like 4.92 ERA. After starting out 3-0 with a 3.65 ERA over his first four starts he is now just 2-4 with a 5.88 ERA over his past six outings. He has been an even bigger nightmare on the road, going 1-4 with a 7.62 ERA in his past five assignments away from the Friendly Confines.
May 27 - 1:49 AM

Adrian Gonzalez finished 1-for-4 with a two-run home run off of Cubs starter Jake Arrieta in Friday's victory.

Gonzalez only had four home runs at this point last season and he ended up with 18 homers and 90 RBI, so he isn't that far behind last year's production. He heats up as the weather gets warmer and he still possesses the ability to post clouts and RBI in bunches.
