Steven Matz (lat) threw on flat ground Monday.

It's the first time he's done any throwing since he was diagnosed with a partially torn left lat muscle nearly four weeks ago. Obviously, the Mets will proceed cautiously with Matz, building him back up slowly. There's no timetable for his return, but Monday was a nice step.

Josh Donaldson went 2-for-4 with a home run Monday in the Blue Jays' victory over the Twins.

Donaldson doubled in the bottom of the first inning and and then cranked a two-run shot off Twins starter Ervin Santana in the bottom of the fifth. The 29-year-old third baseman is sporting a tremendous .916 OPS with 27 home runs and 77 RBI in 105 games this season for the Blue Jays, who are now tied with Minnesota for the second American League Wild Card spot.

Torii Hunter slugged a solo home run Monday in the Twins' afternoon loss to the Blue Jays.

It was the only run Minnesota scored against David Price in his Blue Jays debut at Rogers Centre in Toronto. Hunter has 17 home runs and 56 RBI in 94 games this season, though that has come with a .249 average and .303 OBP.

Ervin Santana gave up three earned runs in six innings Monday in a loss to the Blue Jays.

Santana allowed six hits and three walks in the tough afternoon outing at Rogers Centre. He had been fairly sharp in his first four outings since returning from an 80-game PED suspension, but his last two turns in the Twins' rotation have not gone well. The 32-year-old right-hander now stands 2-2 with a 3.89 ERA.

Reds 1B prospect Adam Duvall homered in his first game for Triple-A Louisville on Sunday.

Duvall now has 27 round-trippers in 408 at-bats this year. There's no denying his immense power, but unfortunately Duvall is in the same position he was in San Francisco. With the Giants, he was blocked at first base by Brandon Belt. Now in Cincinnati, the same is true with Joey Votto. Duvall's best chance to crack the majors might be as a corner outfielder, though it's unclear if he can make that transition.

David Price fired eight innings of one-run ball Monday in the Blue Jays' 5-1 defeat of the Twins.

It was Price's first start with the Jays and he was absolutely terrific in front of a sellout crowd at Rogers Centre. Minnesota managed just three hits and Price struck out 11 batters before leaving to a standing ovation after the top of the eighth. The only run he gave up was on a second-inning solo homer by Torii Hunter. Price will try for more of the same this weekend at Yankee Stadium.

Blue Jays sent OF Ezequiel Carrera outright to Triple-A Buffalo.

Carrera was designated for assignment by the Jays on Saturday and passed through waivers unclaimed. The 28-year-old outfielder is a .259/.311/.349 career hitter.

White Sox SS prospect Eddy Alvarez cranked his fourth home run of the season Sunday for High-A Winston-Salem.

Alvarez is more of a contact hitter so whenever he does homer it's icing on the cake. The 25-year-old has all the tools to be a successful leadoff hitter. He gets on base a ton (.419 on base percentage across two levels this season) and steals with ease (46 thefts on 54 attempts). Alvarez has posted a spectacular 1.122 OPS since joining Winston-Salem on July 22.
