Bengals coach Marvin Lewis believes Tyler Eifert (ankle) is "close" to returning.

Michael Floyd is in the league's concussion protocol.

Speaking Monday, 49ers coach Chip Kelly hinted Colin Kaepernick could become the team's starter once he's back to full health.

"I don’t think he’s 100 percent right now so that’s why he’s our No. 2," Kelly said. Kelly hinted change could come once Kap is "full-go." Blaine Gabbert has predictably been setting the quarterback position back decades as Kelly's starter. He's averaging 177 passing yards and has four total touchdowns. His rate stats are abysmal. Kap's game was in full-on collapse last season, but he deserves a shot to be a dual-threat in Kelly's run-heavy offense. It's starting to look like a matter of when, not if, Kap gets a chance to supplant Gabbert.

Vikings LG Alex Boone (hip) "should be OK" for Week 4.

Boone was knocked out after 19 snaps Sunday, but his MRI came back clean. Boone is hardly an impact player, but the Vikings' shaky line can't afford any more injuries.

Patriots signed DE John Hughes.

A Browns flameout, Hughes was cut last Tuesday. Hughes could be the roster casualty when Rob Ninkovich returns from his suspension in Week 5.

Redskins C Kory Lichtensteiger (calf) and LG Shawn Lauvao (ankle) are week to week.

That's not going to help the Redskins' stagnant run game, though Lichtensteiger and Lauvao are both injury prone. Neither issue should come as a surprise. The Redskins are going to have to get creative for Week 4. Coach Jay Gruden said LT Trent Williams could play some guard.

Browns coach Hue Jackson confirmed Cody Kessler will remain the team's starter going forward.

It's not surprising, as Kessler doesn't have any legitimate competition. Kessler lost Week 3 snaps to Terrelle Pryor, but Pryor has proven he's not a viable starter. He's a gadget player who will be mixed in for certain plays and packages. Kessler was surprisingly competent against the Dolphins, but is going to struggle for QB2 value most weeks.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports there is "optimism" Rashad Jennings (thumb) returns for Week 4.

There's optimism and urgency, as the Giants' unsettled backfield has lost Shane Vereen (triceps) for the season. Jennings was a surprising scratch on Sunday, so we'd still consider his status far from certain. He's unsure of his ability to contribute in the passing game, something that will be even more of a necessity with Vereen out. The Giants will issue their first injury report on Thursday.
