Zach Eflin gave up eight runs and three homers in six innings Tuesday in a loss to the Rockies.

Eflin had been serviceable to date because he managed to give up a modest four homers in 36 innings. Seven homers in 42 innings seems more like what should have been expected, given his poor strikeout rate and lack of ability to induce grounder after grounder. He might hang as a fifth starter, but he doesn't have much upside beyond that.

Lorenzo Cain swatted his second homer of the season Tuesday versus the Yankees.

Cain's solo shot with one out in the seventh was the only run the Royals could muster off of Jordan Montgomery, but they got to the Yankees' bullpen in the latter innings. While he's sporting a .361 on-base percentage, Cain's homer Tuesday was only his second of the season.

Sammy Solis (elbow) is headed to extended spring training to ramp up the intensity of his rehab.

Solis played catch Tuesday without issue and could begin throwing off a mound this weekend at the Nationals' complex in West Palm Beach. He's been on the disabled list since mid-April with inflammation in his left elbow. The southpaw is trending toward a mid-June return.

Andrew Knapp hit his second homer and walked Tuesday against the Rockies.

The Phillies are searching all over for offense and Knapp has been very good, hitting .261 with an .848 OPS in 46 at-bats. Still, starting catcher Cameron Rupp hasn't been a problem -- he has a .776 OPS -- and there's not really any way for the Phillies to play both of them. Knapp figures to remain a backup.

Chris Carter belted a solo homer and drew a walk in Tuesday's loss to the Royals.

Carter's blast over the left field wall in the fifth inning put the Yankees out to a 2-0 lead, but they were outscored 6-0 the rest of the way. The big first baseman has now gone deep in each of the first two games of the series.

Jeff Locke (biceps) is scheduled to make a fourth minor league rehab start Wednesday with Double-A Jacksonville.

If it goes well, it should be his last. Locke has registered a promising 2.51 ERA with 17 strikeouts and zero walks through 14 1/3 innings (three starts) in the minor leagues. The left-hander has been on the disabled list all season because of biceps tendinitis.
May 23 - 10:03 PM

Tyson Ross (shoulder) threw five scoreless innings Tuesday in a rehab start with Triple-A Round Rock.

Ross needed just 73 pitches to make it through those five shutout innings, yielding only two hits. The right-hander could be cleared to join the Rangers' starting rotation after just two more minor league appearances, assuming they go as smoothly as his start on Tuesday. He last pitched in a major league game on Opening Day in 2016.

Anthony Rendon had two homers, a double and five RBI as the Nationals crushed the Mariners 10-1 on Tuesday.

That's not quite three homers and 10 RBI, like he had last month against the Mets, but it does make him the third player this year with multiple two-homer, five-RBI games, joining Jay Bruce and teammate Bryce Harper. Rendon has seven homers and 29 RBI in 42 games.
