Pirates optioned C Jacob Stallings to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Stallings was called up last week to provide some extra depth behind the plate. He's 2-for-7 with a double and two runs scored at the major league level this season.

Zach Britton (forearm) gave up one run on two hits in one inning of work Monday in his latest rehab appearance with Double-A Bowie.

Britton struck out one batter while throwing 12 out of 18 pitches for strikes. "A lot of positives," said Britton. "The worst line I've had, but by far the best stuff. It makes no sense." The southpaw had three scoreless appearances between Low-A Aberdeen and Class A Delmarva before moving up to Double-A on Monday. He's slated to pitch again with Bowie on Thursday before making stops with High-A Frederick and Triple-A Norfolk. The plan calls for him to be activated on July 5.

Carter Capps was ejected from his most recent appearance with Triple-A El Paso on Sunday after throwing a pair of illegal pitches.

Capps' unorthodox delivery is notoriously questionable and MLB instituted a new rule in response to it this spring. His mechanics are clearly a work in progress, but he has delivered six straight scoreless appearances in Triple-A (with four walks and four strikeouts) in his latest rehab assignment as he makes his way back from Tommy John surgery. If all goes well, Capps should find his way to the back-end of the Padres' bullpen relatively soon.

Kyle Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a single and three strikeouts Monday in his first game since his demotion to Triple-A Iowa.

Schwarber struck out in his first three at-bats before hitting a line-drive single off the wall in the eighth inning. The 24-year-old slugger batted just .171/.295/.378 through 64 games prior to his demotion last week. Cubs manager Joe Maddon doesn't expect him to stay down in the minors for long, but there's no clear timetable for his return. In addition to giving him a mental break, the Cubs want to work on his swing mechanics.

Addison Russell (shoulder) struck out as a pinch-hitter in Monday's game against the Nationals.

Russell was held out of the starting lineup after he was forced to exit Sunday's game with right shoulder discomfort. That he was able to pinch-hit suggests that he's not far off.

Buster Posey went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and three total RBI in Monday's win over the Rockies.

Posey rocked a deep RBI double off German Marquez in the first inning, came through with a sacrifice fly in the third and put a cap on his fine evening with an RBI single in the ninth. The All-Star backstop is slashing a blistering .347/.424/.536 with 10 homers and 33 RBI in 239 at-bats this season. If the Giants were anywhere close to contention -- sitting at 28-51 in an ultra-competitive NL West, they have a giant fork sticking out of their back right now -- Posey would probably be drawing some level of early MVP talk.
Jun 27 - 1:37 AM

Denard Span went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple and two runs scored in Monday's win over the Rockies.

Span struck for an RBI triple in the fourth inning. He is up to four triples on the season and is now hitting .282/.332/.435 with four homers, 15 RBI and 28 runs scored in 216 at-bats. The veteran outfielder has turned in multi-hit efforts in four of his last six games.
Jun 27 - 1:35 AM

Nolan Arenado went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in Monday's loss to the Giants.

They do not come around too often for the All-Star third baseman, but this was a rough day at the office for Arenado. Moving on, now. The slugger is hitting a brilliant .292/.343/.552 with 15 homers and 59 RBI in 78 games this season.
