Matt Cain fired six innings of two-run ball in a victory over the A's on Wednesday.

Cain whiffed four, walked two and allowed five hits in earning his first win since May 15. Entering tonight, he'd gone 0-4 with a 4.65 ERA in seven starts since that date. With that as a caveat, Cain has actually pitched quite well in the very recent past, allowing just four earned runs total over his last three outings. Now 2-7 with a 4.18 ERA, he heads into the break hoping to carry over the momentum.

In his Oakland debut, Jason Hammel entitled the Giants to three runs -- two earned -- over five innings in Wednesday's 5-2 loss.

He scuffled in green and gold, walking three and allowing six hits in failing to guide the A's to a season-high seventh consecutive victory. The 31-year-old hurler collected an 8-5 record, 2.98 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 104/23 K/BB ratio over 108 2/3 innings as a member of the Cubs prior to coming over with Jeff Samardzija for Addison Russell, Dan Straily, Billy McKinney and a PTBNL last week. Hammel finished the first half 8-6 with a 3.60 ERA and 1.06 WHIP.
Jul 10 - 1:22 AM

Brandon McCarthy, making his Yankees debut, allowed four runs (one earned) over 6 2/3 innings in Wednesday's 5-4, 14-inning win over the Indians.

McCarthy joined the Yankees in the trade that sent Vidal Nuno to the D'Backs on Sunday. The right-hander allowed three unearned runs in the first inning and one earned run in the fourth. Overall, he surrendered nine hits, walked one, and struck out three. Combined with his time with the D'Backs, McCarthy is 3-10 with a 4.80 ERA and a 96/21 K/BB ratio. McCarthy will face the Reds at Yankee Stadium following the All-Star break.

Josh Tomlin went home with a no-decision, allowing four runs over seven innings in Wednesday's 14-inning loss to the Yankees.

Compared to some of his recent starts, Tomlin was on point on Wednesday. Tomlin entered the start having allowed at least four runs without making it through the sixth inning in four out of his previous five starts. On this night, he held the Yankees to eight hits without issuing a walk while striking out five. Tomlin owns a 4.21 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP, and a 69/9 K/BB ratio. After the Indians return from the All-Star break, Tomlin will take on the Tigers on the road in his next start.
Jul 10 - 12:11 AM

David Robertson held the Indians scoreless in the 14th inning to pick up his 22nd save of the season as the Yankees won on Wednesday.

Things were a bit tense as Jason Kipnis singled with one out and stole second, leaving the tying run 180 feet away, but Robertson was able to strike out Asdrubal Cabrera and get Michael Brantley to fly out to end the ballgame after 14 innings. Robertson is now 22-for-24 in save situations with a 2.84 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and 57/10 K/BB ratio.
Jul 10 - 12:08 AM

Asdrubal Cabrera doubled and scored, going 3-for-7 overall, in an extra-inning loss against the Yankees on Wednesday.

Cabrera has been in a rut at the plate, entering the night with a .412 OPS over his last 56 plate appearances. The three-hit night helps bring his OPS closer towards .700 on the season overall. The shortstop is slashing .248/.308/.391 with eight home runs and 34 RBI.
Jul 10 - 12:05 AM

Yadier Molina will undergo an MRI on his sprained right thumb to determine the severity of the injury.

Molina will undergo the tests Wednesday night, with the results coming back sometime Thursday. Once the extent of the injury is known, it will shed some more light on how much time the All-Star catcher might miss. Tony Cruz will start in Molina's place on Thursday and perhaps through the weekend. Molina suffered the sprain Wednesday on an awkward slide into third base.
Jul 10 - 12:03 AM

Mark Teixeira went 2-for-6, homering twice, as the Yankees won in extra innings against the Indians on Wednesday.

Teixeira hit a solo shot off of Josh Tomlin in the fourth inning, and then hit a two-run shot off of Tomlin in the fifth. The first baseman now has 17 on the season along with 47 RBI and a .241/.338/.470 slash line.
