Carlos Asuaje went 4-for-7 with three RBI against the Giants in Friday's 11-inning game.

Asuaje was a disappointment in Triple-A this year, posting a .741 OPS while playing in an extremely friendly hitting environment at El Paso. He's done quite a bit better in the majors thus far, coming in at .830 in 84 at-bats. If it keeps up, he should continue to start at second after Yangervis Solarte returns, with Solarte returning to his old position. Unfortunately, his lack of power and stolen base ability still leaves him with little fantasy upside.

Hunter Pence went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI before being removed from Friday's game against the Padres.

Pence was replaced in a double-switch, but he still had his best game of the month. In fact, his double tonight was his first since June 22.

Brandon Maurer took his first blown save in two months after giving up three runs in the ninth Friday against the Giants.

Maurer could have closed this one out without a run scoring, but Jerry Meals wouldn't give him a borderline pitch against Brandon Crawford with two strikes and two outs. Crawford singled in a run, bringing pinch-hitter Conor Gillaspie to the plate as the tying run. Meals again failed to call a strike on a close pitch to begin the at-bat, and Gillaspie hit the 1-0 offering out to right. Maurer hadn't given up a run since June 25 and he's 20-for-23 saving games this year, so his job is safe.

Jeff Samardzija was lifted after allowing five runs in 4 1/3 innings Friday versus the Padres.

Samardzija seemed to be trending in the right direction last month, but now he's gotten roughed up by one of the game's worst offenses in back-to-back starts, yielding 12 runs in 10 1/3 innings versus the Padres. His ERA is back over 5.00 (at 5.05) for the first time since mid-May.

Trevor Cahill gave up six runs -- five earned -- in 3 2/3 innings Friday versus the Giants.

The Padres are looking to trade Cahill before the deadline, so this was a very disappointing result for them. Cahill ended up walking four and throwing exactly have of his 86 pitches for strikes. He's due to face the Mets next if he's still a member of the Padres organization.

Ryon Healy (head) expects to return to the Athletics' lineup on Saturday.

Healy was removed from Friday's game after a rogue ground ball hopped up and hit him in the head, but he passed all of his concussion tests and anticipates getting right back in the lineup. Still, it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see him sit for a day just as a precautionary measure.

Jaime Garcia allowed three runs over seven innings and hit a grand slam off Alex Wood to lead the Braves to a 12-3 rout of the Dodgers on Friday.

One of the more surprising results of the season, in no small part because a Garcia trade to Minnesota seemed all but finalized 24 hours earlier. Garcia helped his stock some with a fine outing against the NL's hottest and probably best team. He's won two straight to get to 4-7 with a 4.30 ERA for the year.

Alex Wood finally had an off night on Friday, giving up nine runs -- seven earned -- in 4 2/3 innings versus the Braves to take his first loss of the season.

Wood had been 11-0 with a 1.56 ERA. He gave up more earned runs tonight than he had in his previous 10 starts combined (six runs in 62 innings). He hurt his own cause in the fourth, when he tried to handle a popup and dropped it, scoring two runs. He also gave up a grand slam to opposing starter Jaime Garcia, which wasn't ideal.
