Brandon Kintzler notched a save with a perfect ninth in a 1-0 game Tuesday against the Rays.

After a slow start to his spring, Kintzler has turned in scoreless innings in five of his six appearances this month. He'll open up as the Twins' closer, and while that's probably not his ideal role, there's absolutely no one breathing down his next for the job.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday that he hasn't decided yet whether Aaron Judge or Aaron Hicks will be the starter in right field.

Judge entered spring training as the presumed favorite and has batted .321/.390/.509 with two homers and a solid 12/6 K/BB ratio over 53 at-bats. If that's not enough to win the job, then perhaps the intention all along was to send him back to Triple-A for more seasoning. Hicks has also had a nice spring with a .286/.375/.571 line and three longballs. Worth noting is that Hicks is in the Yanks' Grapefruit League lineup Tuesday and Girardi said it could be similar to the one he'll use Opening Day.

Chris Archer threw three scoreless innings and struck out four Tuesday against the Twins.

You'll notice that most starters will go fewer innings in their final starts of the spring, as was certainly the case here. Archer's next appearance will be in Sunday's regular-season opener against the Yankees. He had a 1.98 ERA in four spring starts, plus a scoreless, four-inning appearance for Team USA against Colombia.

Mallex Smith went 0-for-3 from the leadoff spot Tuesday and is hitting just .167 this spring.

If Smith is in the Opening Day lineup, as seems likely, it certainly won't be because he earned it with his play this spring; to go along with the .167 average, he has just two walks and one extra-base hit in 36 at-bats. The speed makes him intriguing for fantasy purposes, but he's probably going to get some Triple-A time once Colby Rasmus comes off the disabled list.

Lorenzo Cain was scratched from Tuesday's Cactus League game against the White Sox due to tightness in his left side.

Alex Gordon will take his place in center field with Brandon Moss handling left. Cain felt tightness during batting practice and was scratched as a precaution. Until the Royals update his status, consider Cain day-to-day.

Mets optioned C Kevin Plawecki to Triple-A Las Vegas.

As expected, Travis d'Arnaud and Rene Rivera will serve as the Mets' Opening Day catchers. Plawecki performed reasonably well this spring (.269 AVG in 26 at-bats) but it wasn't enough to overtake either of the incumbents. The Mets won't need him until d'Arnaud or Rivera gets hurt.

Bo Schultz will undergo right elbow surgery on Wednesday.

Schultz will have bone chips removed and a doctor will also check for ligament damage. Even if Schultz's ligament is in tact, it's a safe bet he won't be throwing a baseball any time soon. Schultz posted a nondescript 5.51 ERA at the big league level last season.

Raisel Iglesias (elbow, hips) threw a side session without issue on Tuesday.

MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports that Iglesias will break camp with the team. Iglesias slipped in the shower a few weeks ago, injuring his right elbow as well as both of his hips. The Reds haven't announced a closer but Iglesias is the favorite for the majority of ninth-inning work out of the gate.
