Brandon Crawford (fingers) is not in Wednesday's lineup against the Padres.

Not surprising, as Crawford sprained the index and middle fingers on his right hand during Tuesday's game and is dealing with some swelling. There's a chance he could return Thursday. Joaquin Arias is starting at shortstop Wednesday while Tony Abreu plays third.

The Astros have officially agreed to terms with No. 1 overall pick Mark Appel.

The Astros denied reports of a deal over the weekend, but they are expected to hold a press conference Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET to formally announce the signing. Jim Callis of Baseball America reports that Appel will receive a $6.35 million bonus, which is approximately $1.44 million less than the assigned slot value for the pick. Either way, his gamble to go back to Stanford for his senior season has paid off quite nicely. The 21-year-old right-hander has a chance to move through the Astros' system very quickly.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Wednesday that Jake Arrieta will join the starting rotation with Triple-A Norfolk.

Arrieta was optioned to the minors after he gave up five runs on 10 hits and a walk over 4 2/3 innings Monday in a spot-start against the Tigers. The 27-year-old right-hander has a 7.23 ERA in five starts in the majors this season and a 5.50 ERA in six starts and one relief appearance in Triple-A, but the Orioles aren't considering changing his role yet.

Red Sox agreed to terms with first-round pick LHP Trey Ball.

Ball, the No. 7 overall pick in this Monday's First-Year Player Draft, took his physical Monday and the signing is expected to be made official Wednesday. The 18-year-old southpaw is expected to sign for less than the $3.246 million recommended slot value for the pick.

The Phillies have promoted prospect third baseman Maikel Franco to Double-A Reading.

It's a well deserved promotion for Franco, as he batted .299/.349/.576 with 16 home runs and a .925 OPS through 65 games this season with High-A Clearwater. Baseball America ranked the 20-year-old as the organization's No. 8 prospect coming into the season, but his stock is on the rise.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said that Nolan Reimold (hamstring) felt good after his first rehab game with Double-A Bowie on Tuesday.

Reimold, out since May 11 with a right hamstring strain, went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts as the designated hitter. He's slated to start in left field on Wednesday. Barring any setbacks, he should rejoin the Orioles' lineup by the end of the month.

Jaff Decker will be recalled from Triple-A Tucson on Wednesday.

He'll fill the roster spot of Everth Cabrera, who will be placed on the disabled list with a hamstring injury. Decker had a brief stint with the Padres last week, but didn't get an at-bat. The 26-year-old is a .264/.403/.452 hitter over parts of six seasons in the minors.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that people who have spoken with MLB investigators feel it's likely that "at least some" suspensions will be issued in the Biogenesis case.

MLB has begun interviewing players associated with the case, though they have yet to talk to Ryan Braun or Alex Rodriguez, seemingly because they want to gather enough evidence before confronting them. Interestingly, Heyman notes that MLB officials believe the league's Joint Drug Agreement may allow it to announce suspensions before any appeal process because the names involved have already been leaked. The MLBPA obviously wouldn't be happy with that. While Braun and Rodriguez have garnered most of the attention in the case, Melky Cabrera, Bartolo Colon, Yasmani Grandal, Nelson Cruz, Jhonny Peralta, Everth Cabrera, Francisco Cervelli, Jesus Montero are among the other players who have been connected to the now-shuttered clinic.
