Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports that the Blue Jays have been scouting Brandon Barnes.

Saunders notes that the Jays have "not yet put together a deal for Barnes," but a trade of the outfielder "at the right price, could make sense." Barnes is only a career .237/.285/.345 hitter over parts of three major league seasons, but he's a gifted defensive outfielder who can play all three spots.

Athletics acquired RHP Deck McGuire from the Blue Jays in exchange for cash considerations; optioned him to Triple-A Sacramento.

McGuire, who was designated for assignment last week, was the No. 11 overall pick in 2010 but hasn't developed as hoped. The 25-year-old has put up a 4.21 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 115 1/3 innings this season between Double- and Triple-A.

Justin Ruggiano (groin) is available to pinch-hit Friday.

Ruggiano hasn't played since Tuesday due to some tightness in his groin. The outfielder has made enough progress that he can swing a bat, but he's yet to be cleared to play the field.

Edwin Jackson does not have any lingering effects after leaving Thursday's start with cramping in his right hand.

He'll be fine for his next scheduled outing on Tuesday against the Rockies. Jackson has posted an ugly 5.68 ERA and 1.56 WHIP over 21 starts this season.

Padres optioned INF Jace Peterson to Triple-A El Paso.

He's clearing room for the return of Jesse Hahn to the Padres' rotation. Peterson has hit just .100/.151/.100 across 25 games this season at the big league level but should be back in September, if not before.

Padres recalled RHP Jesse Hahn from Triple-A El Paso.

Hahn will start on Friday in Atlanta after being sent down before the All-Star break in order to keep pitching. The young right-hander has been superb over his 40 2/3 innings with the Padres, putting up a 2.21 ERA and 1.06 WHIP with 47 strikeouts.

Phillies sent RHP Jeff Manship outright to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Manship had been designated for assignment, but he cleared waivers and has decided to stay in the organization. The righty has posted a 6.65 ERA over 20 relief appearances for the Phils this season.

MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez reports that Cuban prospect Rusney Castillo will work out at shortstop in addition to center field during his showcase Saturday.

Castillo is generally viewed as an outfielder, but he played some in the infield in Cuba and will apparently try to show teams Saturday that he's capable of being used there in the majors. The 27-year-old is generating plenty of buzz with his terrific speed and occasional pop. Sanchez lists the Cubs, White Sox, Braves and Giants among the teams that have expressed interest in Castillo, but every club is expected to be represented on Saturday.
