Jeremy Jeffress recorded his 24th save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning in Thursday's victory over the Diamondbacks.

Jeffress had to go through a 10-pitch battle with Jake Lamb with one out but eventually got him to ground out in a perfect frame. He's been good all year but has really turned it on of late, as the closer has allowed just one earned run over his last 16 appearances. He'll be a sought after commodity leading up to the trade deadline.

Robbie Ray struck out 11 but suffered a loss Thursday against the Brewers, yielding five runs over 5 2/3 innings.

He gave up five hits -- including a two-run homer -- and walked a pair, needing 101 pitches to cover the 5 2/3 frames. Only Jose Fernandez and Max Scherzer have a better K/9 this season than Ray's 11.2 mark, but the southpaw has also put up a 4.70 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. Quite the mixed bag. He'll face the Nationals next time out.

Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said there's still no timetable for Matt Carpenter (oblique) to begin a rehab assignment.

There was optimism Carpenter might begin a rehab assignment this week but it doesn't look like that's going to happen now. Carpenter has sat out the last three weeks with a strained oblique. The Cards could really use his bat in the lineup. The three-time All-Star leads the NL in on base percentage (.420) and is also second in OPS (.988).

Hernan Perez went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Thursday's win over the Diamondbacks.

The D'Backs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Perez knotted things back up with a two-run blast in the third. He also added a pair of stolen bases, giving him 16 on the season. While he played shortstop Thursday, Perez has taken over as the Brewers' third baseman since the trade of Aaron Hill and has provided sneaky production this season. He's on pace for 10 homers and 26 stolen bases despite a relatively limited number of at-bats.

Mets SS prospect Amed Rosario has been placed on the disabled list at Double-A Binghamton with lower body soreness.

It's unclear how much time he'll miss. The Mets' top prospect has been lighting it up at Double-A, batting .354 with 16 RBI since his promotion last month. If all goes well, the 20-year-old could make his debut in 2017.
Jul 28 - 5:10 PM

Yasmany Tomas went 2-for-4 with a two-RBI double in Thursday's loss to the Brewers.

Tomas' ground-rule double in the top of the first inning plated two and he later added a single in the seventh. The big outfielder has really been swinging a hot stick of late with 14 hits -- including four home runs -- over his last 36 at-bats.

MLB.com's Mark Bowman confirmed Julio Teheran (lat) will start Saturday against the Phillies.

Teheran had his turn pushed back a few days after leaving his last start with a strained lat but he recovered nicely from his side session and should see his usual workload on Saturday. The right-hander has been one of the few bright spots for Atlanta this year. He holds an elite 2.71 ERA over 20 outings this season.

Tyler Anderson held the Mets to one run over six innings Thursday, taking a no-decision in a 2-1 victory.

Anderson picked up five strikeouts while allowing seven hits and zero walks. He was in line to take a tough-luck loss before the Rockies rallied for a pair of runs in the ninth inning. Anderson has been the Rockies' most reliable starter since entering the rotation, putting up a 3.33 ERA and 1.28 WHIP over nine outings. He'll try to keep it going his next time out versus the Dodgers.
