Whit Merrifield went 2-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored Tuesday against the Twins.

Merrifield started at second base and batted second in the game, the second straight game he's hit in the No. 2 hole. And he's responded, going 4-for-10 with three doubles and three runs scored in those two games. The 27-year-old has started games at second, third and in left field since having his contract purchased last week, batting .333 in five games. He doesn't have much mixed league appeal, but his versatility and the fact that Royals manager Ned Yost seems to like him -- this is the same guy that continues to bat Alcides Escobar leadoff -- gives him some AL-only value if he keeps hitting in prime spots in the lineup with some regularity.

Salvador Perez went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's win over the Twins.

A night after collecting five hits and falling a homer shy of the cycle, Perez found his homer in the second inning against Twins starter Ervin Santana. The home run was his seventh of the year, giving him 24 RBI with 18 runs scored. The workhorse catcher has appeared in 43 of the team's 45 games thus far, batting .276/.305/.500 overall.

Ervin Santana was battered by the Royals for nine hits and six runs over 3 2/3 innings in a loss Tuesday.

The start was, by almost any measure, his worst of the season to date, dropping his record to 1-3 overall. Through his first seven starts, Santana owned a 3.13 ERA; after Tuesday, it sits at 4.17, with a 1.49 WHIP to boot. The 33-year-old has generally been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dismal season for the Twins, and he'll attempt to get back on track Monday at the Athletics.
May 25 - 12:15 AM

Edinson Volquez allowed four runs -- two earned -- over 6 2/3 innings in a win over the Twins on Tuesday.

The start was reminiscent of most of Volquez' starts in recent weeks -- lots of baserunners, and lots of ground balls to help limit the damage. The win moved him to 5-4 on the year with a 3.67 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. Volquez will next face the White Sox on Sunday.
May 25 - 12:11 AM

Nomar Mazara finished 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored as the Rangers topped the Angels 4-1 on Tuesday.

Mazara hit a two-run home run off Angels starter Jhoulys Chacin in the sixth inning, and he also singled and scored in the fourth. The homer was the third in six games for the outfielder, giving him seven on the season. The 21-year-old is hitting .317/.364/.483 in 38 games after starting the year at Triple-A.

Alex Guerrero (knee) notched his first hit at the Double-A level on Tuesday night.

Guerrero is now 1-for-24 since moving his rehab assignment from High-A Rancho Cucamonga to Double-A Tulsa. There's no rush from the Dodgers to fit him on the active major league roster, but it will have to happen by next Monday. He can't be optioned.
May 24 - 11:57 PM

Sam Dyson struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday, closing out the Angels to earn his fifth save.

Dyson needed just 10 pitches to finish off the bottom portion of the Angels order. Despite not being a Proven Closer, he's taken to the closer role with little issue thus far, collecting three saves in three chances since Shawn Tolleson was removed from ninth-inning duties last week. Dyson owns a 2.05 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 17/6 K/BB ratio in 22 innings and shouldn't be a free agent in many fantasy leagues at this point.
May 24 - 11:57 PM

Jhoulys Chacin allowed three runs over six innings Tuesday in a loss to the Rangers.

Chacin didn't pitch poorly, aside from a two-run home run by Nomar Mazara, but his teammates provided him with just one run of support on the evening. The loss was his first in three starts since a trade to the Angels earlier this month. Between the Braves and Angels, Chacin is now 1-3 with a 5.11 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in eight starts. His task doesn't get any easier Monday against the Tigers.
