Angels released 2B Danny Espinosa.

Jul 20 - 5:13 PM

Doug Fister was allowed to give up six runs in 4 1/3 innings Thursday in a loss to the Blue Jays.

In Fister's defense, four of the runs should have been unearned; Brock Holt lost Steve Pearce's popup in the sun with two outs and the bases loaded in the third and had it bounce off his glove for a hit. Still, Fister wasn't any good at any point today -- he walked four and threw just 53 of 100 pitches for strikes -- and he should have been working with a shorter leash. John Farrell was asleep at the wheel, though; he didn't even bother to challenge Russell Martin's plate block in the second inning, potentially costing the Red Sox a monster frame (they went on to score three times anyway). Fister shouldn't be long for the Red Sox roster now that Eduardo Rodriguez and Brian Johnson are healthy.

Padres activated OF Hunter Renfroe from the 10-day disabled list.

Padres placed OF Manuel Margot on the paternity leave list.

Dustin Pedroia went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer Thursday against the Blue Jays.

Pedroia drove in nine runs during the four-game series against Toronto. He has 26 RBI in his last 20 games, matching his total from his first 59 games.

Mike Wright (shoulder) will pitch two innings in Saturday's rehab appearances with the Gulf Coast Orioles.

Wright is hoping for a better outing Saturday after being lit up for four runs in 2/3 of an inning in his first rehab appearance on Monday. The 27-year-old has spent the past month recovering from shoulder bursitis. Look for him to return as a long reliever.
Jul 20 - 4:47 PM

Anthony Santander (forearm) will begin a rehab assignment on July 27.

Santander has spent most of the year nursing a strained forearm and was just recently cleared to play the outfield. He'll likely report to Double-A Bowie after he finishes his rehab assignment.
Jul 20 - 4:44 PM

Ryan Flaherty (shoulder) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on July 27.

Flaherty's recovery from shoulder tendinitis has had plenty of stops and starts but it looks like he'll be game-ready in about a week. The veteran utility man has hit just .233 with no homers over 30 at-bats this season.
