49ers ILB Patrick Willis (toe) returned to practice Wednesday.

Oct 30 - 8:32 AM

Alex Smith (shoulder) is practicing in full this week.

Smith was slammed to the turf by Rams DE Robert Quinn on back-to-back plays late in the first half of Sunday's win over the Rams, lightly spraining his throwing shoulder. It's not a concern going forward. Smith has a dream matchup on paper this week against a Jets team that stuffs the run and gets exposed by the pass, but his conservative style caps upside. Just one out of his 29 pass attempts traveled more than 10 yards down the field Sunday. Smith hasn't thrown a touchdown to a wide receiver this season.

The Cincinnati Enquirer's Richard Skinner wrote on Twitter Wednesday that Giovani Bernard has a "hip pointer" and his clavicle is "bothering him," and Bernard "could miss Sunday('s)" game against the Jaguars.

The clavicle is the collarbone. We've known about that injury for a few weeks. The hip pointer is what kept Bernard out for the final 7-8 minutes of last week's win over Baltimore. The Bengals play the Browns on Thursday Night Football in Week 10, so it's conceivable that they will consider holding him out of Sunday's game in an effort to get him back for a key divisional matchup with 4-3 Cleveland. Keep in mind Skinner was simply replying to a question on Twitter, not reporting. There's just been so little information available on Bernard to this point. Bengals reporters again didn't even ask about his status in Wednesday's press conference with coach Marvin Lewis.

Coach Mike Pettine said Johnny Manziel is "frustrated" that he's not starting, but the Browns "don't plan to force the issue."

Brian Hoyer has been an effective game manager, but the Browns are starting to consider the opportunity costs of sitting Manziel. "I think we all [want to know how Manziel would perform]. That's a question we need to have answered, but it's not something that you can force," Pettine said. "If it ever gets to the point whether we’re potentially up big, down big, or if there's a situation that calls for him to go in, we'll get an opportunity to see him. There's a lot of football left to be played. You’re looking for an evaluation at some point."

A.J. Green (toe) indicated Wednesday he is still unsure of his Week 9 status.

Green practiced on a limited basis Wednesday. It sounds like his availability will be a late-week or game-time decision for Sunday's clash with Jacksonville. "I’m just going to go day-by-day and do a little more tomorrow," Green said. "I think I’ll be fine, but we’ll just take it day-by-day. I have to take care of my body. I have a long career ahead of me. I don’t want anything serious when I can just rest it and make it feel better."

Donnie Avery (groin) has been ruled out for Week 9.

He remains week to week. A.J. Jenkins will play the majority of snaps opposite Dwayne Bowe.
Oct 29 - 7:14 PM

Allen Hurns (ankle) was limited in practice Wednesday.

Hurns played through his ankle injury in Sunday's loss to Miami. He'll be updated again Thursday. Cecil Shorts (groin) is practicing in full for Week 9.
Oct 29 - 7:02 PM

Andre Ellington (foot) was limited in Wednesday's practice.

Ellington will be fine for Sunday's game against the Cowboys. With 20-plus touches in five straight games, Ellington is locked in as a top-12 running back for Week 9.
