Jedd Gyorko went 2-for-3 and drove home a pair of runs on Sunday as the Padres bested the Mariners 8-5 in Cactus League action.
Gyorko plated a run with an RBI single in the first inning then repeated the process again in the third. The two-hit effort raises his spring average to .250 (12-for-48), though he has just one homer and three RBI. He's looking to rebound from a dreadful 2014 season where he hit just .210/.280/.333 with 10 long balls in 111 games.
Andrew Cashner was in mid-season form in Sunday's Cactus League victory over the Mariners, racking up six strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings.
Cashner allowed just one run on four hits and a walk in the contest, that lone run coming on a solo blast off the bat of Jabari Henry. While he's no longer considered the ace of the Padres staff, he has certainly pitched like one this spring, compiling a 2.45 ERA and 14/4 K/BB ratio over 18 1/3 frames.
Dustin Ackley swatted his first Cactus League home run as the Mariners fell to the Padres on Sunday.
Ackley victimized Chris Rearick for the two-run shot in the seventh inning, pulling the M's to within three runs at 6-3. He also added a double, finishing the day 2-for-3. Set to serve as the M's primary left fielder, Ackley has had a terrific spring, hitting .366 (15-for-41) with 10 RBI.
J.A. Happ was once again obliterated in a losing effort against the Padres on Sunday, surrendering six runs (five earned) on 11 hits over his five innings.
Happ issued a pair of walks and struck out three on the afternoon. He now owns a troublesome 7.90 ERA and 1.98 WHIP in 13 2/3 spring innings. The Mariners brass has to be considering if they'd be better off with Roenis Elias in the rotation instead of Happ at this point.
Rangers released OF Ryan Ludwick.
Ludwick was informed earlier in the week that he would not make the team's Opening Day roster, and apparently has elected to seek a better opportunity. The 36-year-old batted just .200/.188/.300 with a homer and three RBI in 30 Cactus League at-bats.
Dan Pfeiffer of MLBlogs.com reports that Yankees prospect Domingo German could require Tommy John surgery.
German, who was acquired over the winter as part of the Martin Prado deal, posted the news on his Instagram account on Sunday. The Yankees have yet to confirm the report, saying that they'll seek a second opinion before determining a course of action. Expect an update on his status in the next few days.
Billy Butler clubbed his fourth Cactus League home run as the Athletics topped the Brewers 7-0 on Sunday.
He finished the day 1-for-3 plus a walk, with his solo blast coming off Tyler Thornburg in the seventh inning. The 28-year-old hit just nine home runs during the 2014 season, so the power outburst this spring is certainly a welcomed sight. He's now hitting .250 with four homers and 11 RBI on the spring season.
Kendall Graveman was outstanding in Sunday's Cactus League victory over the Brewers, hurling 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball.
The 24-year-old allowed just three hits on the afternoon while punching out three. He has had an unbelievable spring, registering a 0.42 ERA and 11/4 K/BB ratio in 21 1/3 innings. While nothing has been made official, he's considered a favorite to land one of the final spots in the Athletics' Opening Day rotation and a very intriguing target in the late rounds of mixed league drafts.
