Twins optioned C John Ryan Murphy to Triple-A Rochester.

Murphy has been in a timeshare with Kurt Suzuki but has managed just three hits in 40 at-bats this season. He'll get a chance to play every day at Rochester and should get another shot in the majors later this year.

Twins purchased the contract OF Darin Mastroianni from Triple-A Rochester.

Mastroianni, 30, is getting another shot in the majors despite hitting just .208/.330/.247 so far this season at Rochester. He'll back up in the outfield.

Twins designated RHP J.R. Graham for assignment.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Darin Mastroianni. The Twins kept Graham on the roster all of last season after taking him in the Rule 5 Draft, but he's now off the 40-man roster after making one appearance in 2016.

Angels general manager Billy Eppler said Friday that tests on Andrew Heaney's left elbow "ranged from normal wear and tear consistent with age and usage to some degree of tear."

In other words, his ulnar collateral ligament is compromised, but the damage appears to be minimal enough that Heaney will try to rehab it first. "Opting for conservative care like other pitchers have done," Eppler said. Even if the rehab works, Heaney is going to be sidelined for a while longer and the chances of the ligament eventually blowing out are pretty high.

Buddy Carlyle has been hired by the Braves as a coaching assistant.

Carlyle will be in charge of handling replay review decisions. In other words, he's decided to retire from baseball. The 38-year-old posted a 5.14 ERA across parts of nine big league seasons.

Athletics activated 3B Danny Valencia from the 15-day disabled list.

Valencia spent the minimum amount of time on the DL and homered in one of his two rehab games. He'll return to a .294/.345/.353 batting line with the A's and will resume his role as the starting third baseman.

There is no timetable for when Josh Hamilton (knee) will resume baseball activities.

Hamilton was pulled off his rehab assignment after just one game after feeling soreness in his surgically-repaired left knee. He's been given a cortisone shot and is working out at the Texas Metroplex Institute in Arlington. Rangers general manager Jon Daniels conceded that it's unlikely Hamilton will ever be 100 percent healthy again. "I don’t think that’s anybody’s expectation at this point. It’s more about getting to a level where he’s comfortable playing on it," he said.

Nationals optioned OF Matt den Dekker to Triple-A Syracuse.

He's clearing space for the return of Ben Revere (oblique) from the disabled list. Den Dekker has hit .194/.265/.323 over 34 plate appearances with the big club this season.
