Gerrit Cole didn't have it Monday, getting touched up for six runs -- five earned -- over just 4 2/3 frames in a loss to the Cubs.

Cole struck out six on the night, but he walked four and permitted six hits, needing a whopping 105 pitches to cover his 4 2/3 innings. The Pirates ace has had a couple clunkers among his five starts and has yet to pitch past the six inning this season. He'll try for better results this weekend in St. Louis.

Dexter Fowler went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases in Monday's win over the Pirates.

The Cubs didn't homer, but they managed to put together a seven-run, 11-hit attack against Gerrit Cole and the Pirates bullpen. Fowler still hasn't cooled off, as he sports a .357/.476/.619 batting line on the season. He's stolen three bases in his last two games and now has five on the year.

Devin Mesoraco is weighing playing through the labrum tear in his left shoulder.

Mesoraco tried to do the same thing last year with a torn labrum in his hip before eventually undergoing surgery. He could do further damage with the shoulder by playing and the Reds aren't expected to contend, so it might be best for him to just go ahead and have the procedure now. "I’m going to definitely have to get surgery at some point," said Mesoraco.

Andrew McCutchen slugged a solo homer and had an RBI groundout in Monday's loss to the Cubs.

He drove in the Pirates' lone two runs on the night, as Jason Hammel and the Cubs' bullpen mostly held down the fort. McCutchen is hitting a disappointing .228/.339/.455 on the season and tweaked his troublesome left knee over the weekend, but he has at least smacked six homers.

Johnny Cueto was lit up by his former team for six runs over five innings but escaped with a no-decision in Monday's 9-6 win over the Reds.

Cueto cruised through the first two frames but was then ambushed for six runs in the third, giving up six hits and a couple walks along the way. The righty pitched well other than the one very bad inning and finished the night with eight strikeouts. He's whiffed 41 over 42 1/3 frames on the year. Cueto faces the Rockies at home this weekend.

Santiago Casilla converted his fifth save of the season with a perfect ninth inning in Monday's win over the Reds.

Protecting a three-run lead, Casilla quickly disposed of the Reds on 11 pitches with two punchouts and a groundout. While he's blown two of seven save chances, Casilla also boasts a 1.86 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 12/2 K/BB ratio over 9 2/3 innings. With Sergio Romo (elbow) hurt and Hunter Strickland struggling, Casilla's closer job is very safe.

Matt Szczur will undergo an MRI on his right hamstring on Tuesday.

Szczur was forced to exit Monday's game with a tight hamstring. He's hopeful it's not serious, but a stint on the disabled list could be in his future.

Brewers designated LHP Sam Freeman for assignment.

The move clears a spot for Junior Guerra, who will be called up to start Tuesday against the Angels. Freeman was acquired from the Rangers last month and was tagged for 11 runs on 13 hits and nine walks over just 7 2/3 innings of work.
