Jay Bruce - OF - Reds

Jay Bruce is not in the Reds' lineup Sunday.

He had been slated to sit before Saturday's game was rained out and remains out of the lineup the next day. Brennan Boesch is in right field Sunday in Bruce's place.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the "expectation" is that Adam Wainwright will miss the rest of the season with a left Achilles injury.

He's yet to undergo an MRI, but the Cardinals don't appear to be optimistic about a diagnosis. It's obviously a massive blow for St. Louis, as Wainwright had allayed some concerns about his elbow with a strong start (1.44 ERA) to the season. The club does at least have some depth to fall back on with Marco Gonzales at Triple-A, although he's currently out with a shoulder/pectoral issue. Gonzales and Jaime Garcia (shoulder) are the likely long-term options to replace Waino in the rotation, but for now the club is likely to go with Tyler Lyons or Tim Cooney. They could also consider moving Carlos Villanueva from the bullpen to the rotation.
Apr 26 - 9:14 AM

Matt Stites (elbow) will throw a bullpen session on Tuesday.

It's his first since being shut down late in spring training with an elbow issue. There remains no timetable for Stites' return, but it appears he's finally making some progress.

Mariners recalled LHP Roenis Elias from Triple-A Tacoma.

He'll start on Sunday against the Twins in place of the injured Hisashi Iwakuma (lat). Iwakuma could be sidelined for up to a month, so Elias might be in line to make a handful of starts for the big club. The left-hander had struggled in the early going at Tacoma with an 8.04 ERA, but he had a nice 3.85 ERA and 7.9 K/9 rate in his rookie season last year.
Apr 26 - 8:33 AM

Mariners optioned LHP Lucas Luetge to Triple-A Tacoma.

He tossed 2 1/3 scoreless frames in his lone appearance on Saturday. Luetge is being sent out to clear room for Roenis Elias, who will start Sunday.

Initial tests for possible ligament damage in Brandon McCarthy's right elbow came back negative.

It doesn't mean he definitely doesn't have a ligament issues -- we'll know for sure after his MRI -- but it's certainly a good sign. The hope is that McCarthy is "only" dealing with tendinitis. He's looking at a stint on the disabled list either way, but surgery won't be required if it's a tendinitis issue. McCarthy admitted that he's been dealing with tightness in his elbow since his last start but it finally became too much on Saturday.

Moved up to the leadoff spot, Brian Dozier went 2-for-5 with a double, a walk, a steal and two runs scored in the Twins' 8-5 victory over the Mariners on Saturday.

That's more like it. Dozier obviously belongs at or very near the top of the Twins lineup, not in the cleanup spot that he had occupied recently. He raised his average to .215 tonight, and the steal was his first of the year.
Apr 26 - 1:02 AM

James Paxton yielded four runs -- one earned -- in 4 2/3 innings Saturday against the Twins.

Paxton struck out seven. His velocity, while still down some from last year, was slightly better than it's been previously this season. He's not nearly out of the woods yet, but his fortunes seem a little better tonight than they did six days ago, when he got lit up by the hapless Rangers.
