Ian Kennedy allowed two runs in two innings Thursday as the Padres fell 9-4 to the Mariners.

Robinson Cano doubled, then Nelson Cruz homered in the third inning. Overall, Kennedy allowed three hits and a walk while striking out two. The right-hander was productive over 201 innings last season, finsihing with a 3.63 ERA and a 207/70 K/BB ratio.
Mar 5 - 6:43 PM

Andrew Cashner gave up a run on three hits in Thursday's start against the Mariners.

Cashner got the first two outs of the first inning easily enough, but then allowed three straight singles to bring in the Mariners' first run. The right-hander was very productive last season, but battled both elbow and shoulder problems during the season. Fantasy owners should be wary of his injury history.
Mar 5 - 6:41 PM

Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports that "serious concern exists" that Cuban infielder Hector Olivera could need Tommy John surgery to repair a damaged ulnar collateral ligament.

Yikes. Olivera got through multiple private workouts without any apparent issues, but subsequent physicals evidently revealed the bad news about his elbow. Typical recovery time for a position player coming back from Tommy John surgery is 6-9 months, which means Olivera would miss the 2015 campaign. Passan notes that Olivera is believed to have at least one offer of more than $50 million, though it's not clear what the status of that offer is now. The report lists the Dodgers, Braves, Padres, A's and Giants as the clubs that have shown the most interest in Olivera.

Robinson Cano went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored Thursday versus the Padres.

Cano singled and scored in the first inning, then doubled and scored in the third. The 32-year-old's power dropped off last year, his first in Seattle, but posted robust numbers in the average and on-base percentage departments. The Mariners are hoping to see him get back into the 20-homer club this season, the second year of his ten-year contract.
Mar 5 - 6:37 PM

Nelson Cruz went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in Thursday's Cactus League victory against the Padres.

Cruz made his 2015 Cactus League debut in style, homering off of Ian Kennedy in the third inning to bring in teammate Robinson Cano. Cruz led the majors in home runs with 40 last season. Despite a move to a more pitcher-friendly park, the slugger is still expected to provide plenty of offense this year.
Mar 5 - 6:33 PM

Hunter Strickland allowed a run in an inning of work as the Giants defeated the Cubs 8-6 Thursday in Cactus League play.

Strickland's spring has started poorly, as he allowed three runs in an inning on Tuesday. This time, he allowed just one run -- a lead-off home run to Billy McKinney. The right-hander has a blazing fastball but as his 2014 post-season performance illustrated, he runs into problems at times with a propensity to allow home runs.
Mar 5 - 6:30 PM

Jacob Turner pitched two scoreless innings Thursday against the Giants.

Turner is looking to win a spot at the back of the Cubs' rotation. He did allow three base runners on a single and two walks, but was able to navigate his way out of trouble. The young right-hander had a rough go of things both before and after coming to the Cubs from the Marlins, finishing with an aggregate 6.13 ERA. Turner has struggled to miss bats in close to 300 major league innings.
Mar 5 - 6:27 PM

Garrett Richards (knee) will throw live batting practice on Saturday.

It will be the first time he's faced hitters since he tore his left patellar tendon last August. Richards won't be ready for Opening Day, but his rehab is coming along well and he's expected to miss only the first couple weeks of the season.
