Mariners' general manager Jerry Dipoto confirmed Friday that Denard Span will primarily play left field with the Mariners.

They'll roll with Mitch Haniger in right field, Guillermo Heredia in center and Span in left on most nights. Span also has extensive experience in center in his career though and can cover there when Heredia is not.

Mariners acquired OF Denard Span and RHP Alex Colome from the Rays for RHP Tommy Romero, RHP Andrew Moore and cash considerations.

Span will help provide depth in the outfield for the Mariners while Dee Gordon is covering for the suspended Robinson Cano at second base. The 34-year-old was slashing .234/.364/.385 with four homers, 28 RBI and six stolen bases in 143 at-bats with the Rays. The improved supporting cast in Seattle should help his fantasy value, but he's still a fringe option in deeper mixed leagues.

Mariners acquired RHP Alex Colome and OF Denard Span from the Rays for RHP Tommy Romero, RHP Andrew Moore and cash considerations.

From the Mariners' perspective, this is a terrific get, as it gives them an outstanding setup man to work in front of all-world closer Edwin Diaz. From a fantasy perspective, it's a devastating blow to Colome owners. Sure, there was a high likelihood that he could be dealt prior to the trade deadline, but most thought they would get at least another month's worth of saves out of him first.

Rays acquired RHP Andrew Moore, RHP Tommy Romero and cash considerations from the Mariners for RHP Alex Colome and OF Denard Span.

It sounds like the 23-year-old hurler won't report to the Rays immediately, he'll conitnue to hone his craft in the minor leagues. It would be surprising if he doesn't see time in the big leagues before the end of the 2018 campaign though.

Rays acquired RHP Tommy Romero, RHP Andrew Moore and cash considerations from the Mariners for RHP Alex Colome and OF Denard Span.

Romero, 22, was a 15th round pick of the Mariners in last June's draft. He owns a 2.27 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 105/30 K/BB ratio across his first 87 1/3 minor league innings. He's an intriguing high-upside arm, though he's seveal years away from being an option at the big league level.

Athletics acquired RHP Peter Bayer from the Rays for RHP Wilmer Font.

The Athletics had designated Font for assignment and were going to lose him for nothing, so they pick up an intriguing arm instead. Bayer, 24, owns a 4.08 ERA and 1.34 across 103 2/3 minor league innings in his career, all at High-A or below.

Rays acquired RHP Wilmer Font from the Athletics for RHP Peter Bayer.

Font was designated for assignment by the Athletics earlier in the week, so they were happy to flip him for whatever they could get. It's unclear if he'll report to Triple-A or join the Rays' forward-thinking bullpen immediately.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the Mariners have acquired Denard Span and Alex Colome from the Rays for Andrew Moore and Tommy Romero.

Span makes a lot of sense for the Mariners, as he can help out in the outfield with Dee Gordon moving to second base. The veteran outfield is off to a solid start this season with a .238/.364/.385 batting line, four home runs and six stolen bases.
