Marlins re-assigned RHPs Javy Guerra, Scott Copeland and Stephen Fife and LHP Kelvin Marte to minor league camp.

You might recognize some of these names, but none of the cuts are a surprise. A former closer, Guerra has struggled to re-establish himself at the big league level the last couple years.

Michael Saunders departed Friday's game against the Yankees after being hit on the right hand by a pitch.

Saunders went to first base after being plunked but was then removed. The Phillies should have an update on the outfielder before long, but Saunders will likely be sent for X-rays.

Yahoo Sports' Tim Brown reports that Derek Norris is signing with the Rays.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times says it will be a straight one-year contract, although Norris is arbitration-eligible in 2018 so the Rays will have two years of control. Robert Murray of FanRag Sports hears that it came down the Rays and Blue Jays and Norris picked the smaller contract because he thinks he'll have a better chance at playing time in Tampa. He should play pretty regularly with the Rays until Wilson Ramos (knee) is ready for catching duties, which probably won't be for a few months into the season. Norris has solid pop for a catcher but is coming off a season where he put up a hideous .186/.255/.328 batting line.

Will Smith will undergo Tommy John surgery on his left elbow next week.

A pair of doctors recommended it, and Smith has decided to go under the knife now rather than risk a failed rehab attempt that could delay his start to 2018. Dr. Neal ElAttrache will perform the operation in Los Angeles. Smith is under team control through 2019.

Nelson Cruz and Robinson Cano aren't playing Friday due to a cold.

James Paxton and others are also under the weather, as there's an illness going around the Mariners' clubhouse. They should all be back up to speed shortly.

Jarrod Dyson remains out of game action due to soreness in his legs.

He's been dealing with fatigue in his legs for a week now, although the Mariners think he'll be ready to play by Sunday. It doesn't sound like a big deal but is obviously worth tracking given how much of Dyson's value is derived from his legs. For what it's worth, the speedster is 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts this spring.

Jose Quintana has been named the White Sox' Opening Day starter.

That's assuming he's not traded before then. Quintana was the obvious choice to take the ball in the opener, of course, following the team's offseason trade of Chris Sale. The left-hander boasts a 3.35 ERA over the last four seasons and has made at least 32 starts each of those years.

Tyler Thornburg (arm) walked one and struck out two over a scoreless inning in a minor league game Friday.

He was clocked in the 91-94 mph range with his fastball. Thornburg has been going through a "dead arm" phase that has limited him to just two Grapefruit League appearances. However, Friday's showing looks to be a positive step and there remains hope that he'll be ready for Opening Day.
