Marlins placed RHP Henderson Alvarez on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.

In addition to the shoulder injury, Alvarez also revealed this week that he has been pitching through a partially torn UCL in his right elbow. The 25-year-old owns a 6.23 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 7/3 K/BB ratio in 17 1/3 innings on the season. The timetable for his return to the mound is unclear at this point.

Rays recalled LHP Enny Romero from Triple-A Durham.

The 24-year-old southpaw suffered a back sprain during spring training and has been slow to make his way back. He has posted a 4.05 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 16/8 K/BB ratio over 20 innings this season between High-A Charlotte and Triple-A Durham.

Rays optioned INF Tim Beckham to Triple-A Durham.

The 25-year-old infielder went 2-for-4 with his fifth home run of the season on Friday, but became a roster casualty as the Rays needed a fresh arm in the bullpen. While he has shown flashes, he's hitting just .224/.266/.459 on the year and could benefit from everyday at-bats at Triple-A.

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said Friday that Alex Wood will make his next scheduled start on Wednesday against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

Wood was scratched from his scheduled start on Friday due to a stomach virus. Gonzalez also noted that Wood could be available out of the bullpen the next couple of days.

White Sox manager Robin Ventura said Friday that Avisail Garcia's knee injury could cause him to miss a couple of games.

The inflammation in his right knee has been an ongoing issue for Garcia, and it looks like it could cost him another couple of games this weekend. J.B. Shuck got the start in his place on Friday and could be in line for additional playing time while Garcia is sidelined.

Chris Archer improved to 5-4 on the year after holding the Athletics to one run over 5 1/3 innings on Friday.

The only run scored on a solo homer from Stephen Vogt in the fourth inning. Archer gave up six hits and four walks while striking out eight batters, so his pitch count added up quickly. He has now walked four batters in three out of his last five starts, but still owns a quality 2.40 ERA and 70/20 K/BB ratio in 60 innings over 10 starts.
May 22 - 11:31 PM

Scott Kazmir gave up three runs (two earned) over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Rays on Friday.

The only damage was a three-run homer by Evan Longoria in the bottom of the fifth inning, but it was enough to put him on the losing side. Kazmir struck out four and walked three in the loss and remains winless over his last seven starts. He'll try to snap the streak in a start against the Tigers next week.

Brad Boxberger notched a one-out save in Friday's 5-2 win over the Athletics.

Ernesto Frieri went into the top of the ninth with a four-run lead, but he was pulled after allowing two hits and a sacrifice fly. However, Boxberger struck out Stephen Vogt swinging to lock down the victory. He's 13-for-13 in save chances this season to go along with a 1.10 ERA and 24/6 K/BB ratio in 16 1/3 innings. Jake McGee is back from the DL, but Rays manager Kevin Cash is still going to give Boxberger opportunities.
