MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports that A.J. Ellis "could be a possible fit" for the Cubs.

The Cubs evidently aren't as interested in Alex Avila as previously suggested, preferring to add a defense-first backstop. Ellis would fit the bill in that regard. The 36-year-old is an impending free agent.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that the Marlins have taken Dan Straily back off the trade market.

The club said last weekend that they weren't trading Straily or any of their cost-controlled players, only to field offers for him a few days later. Apparently, though, they were underwhelmed with those offers, so Straily is back off the block again. The idea that Straily is "untouchable" is ludicrous, but there's nothing wrong with the Marlins hanging on to a solid, cost-controlled starter.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Alex Avila is "not a current priority" for the Cubs.

Avila has put up a .276/.398/.481 batting line with 11 homers this season, but the Cubs are looking for a defense-first backstop. They've been connected to A.J. Ellis.

Rays recalled RHP Austin Pruitt from Triple-A Durham.

Pruitt holds a 6.25 ERA over 18 appearances for the Rays this season. He'll work in long relief.
Jul 28 - 12:23 PM

Rays optioned RHP Andrew Kittredge to Triple-A Durham.

Kittredge allowed two runs over 3 1/3 frames in his brief time with the big club. Austin Pruitt is replacing him in the bullpen.

Rays acquired RHP Steve Cishek and cash considerations from the Mariners in exchange for RHP Erasmo Ramirez.

Cishek got a late start to the season following offseason hip surgery, but he's pitched well since returning with a 3.15 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 15/7 K/BB ratio over 20 innings. He'll slide into a right-handed setup role and is an impending free agent.

Mariners acquired RHP Erasmo Ramirez from the Rays in exchange for RHP Steve Cishek and cash considerations.

Ramirez, of course, came up with the Mariners and made his debut with them. He's posted a 4.80 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 55/16 K/BB ratio over 69 1/3 frames this season and will give the M's the versatility to pitch in relief or in the rotation. Ramirez is under team control through 2019.

Rick Porcello will start Friday against the Royals.

He's moving up a day to take the ball in place of David Price (elbow). Porcello will be going on regular rest. Eduardo Rodriguez will move up to Saturday, and Drew Pomeranz will take the ball Sunday.
