Colin Moran went 2-for-4 as his team fell to the Cardinals on Saturday.

Both hits were singles and neither helped produce a run. The rest of the Pirates combined for just four hits against Jack Flaherty and company. Moran came to the Pirates in the Gerrit Cole trade with the Astros over the winter. The rookie is getting steady playing time at third base. He has a .266 batting average with four home runs and 22 RBI in 160 plate appearances.

Rays optioned LHP Anthony Banda to Triple-A Durham.

The option came a few minutes after Banda picked up his first victory of the season, holding the Orioles to one run while striking out seven over 6 1/3 innings. The Rays are resorting to an entirely unconventional pitching philosophy this year, so Banda's 3.68 ERA and 1.02 WHIP through three appearances clearly means less than having a fresh arm for Sunday. Banda should be back up before long.

Chris Davis went 1-for-2 with an RBI single in Saturday's loss to the Rays.

Davis managed an RBI single in the seventh inning, resulting in the only run to score for the O's in the 5-1 loss. The veteran slugger has done little actual slugging this season. For the campaign, he is slashing a demoralizing .159/.247/.253 with just four home runs and 13 RBI in 47 games.

Starling Marte went 2-for-4 and thumped a long solo home run during Saturday's loss to the Cardinals.

He whacked a Jack Flaherty offering an estimated 447 feet in his first at-bat since being activated off the disabled list earlier in the day. It was his seventh homer of the season, matching the number he hit last year in 77 games (he missed 80 games due to a performance-enhancing drug suspension). He has a .313/.369/.521 slash line with 20 RBI, 31 runs and 10 stolen bases. He has stolen 30 or more bases four times in his career and is a good bet to do it again this year.
May 26 - 7:22 PM

Manny Machado went 1-for-4 with a double in Saturday's loss to the Rays.

Machado picked up double No. 14 on Saturday, but it came in an offensively inept showing by his team. The much-coveted free-agent-to-be and potential summer trade chip owns a gorgeous .327/.399/.619 batting line with 15 home runs and 44 RBI in 52 games this season. He's tracking toward a career year. Whether the season ends in a Baltimore uniform remains to be seen.
May 26 - 7:20 PM

Trevor Williams let in four runs in four innings and was charged with a loss to the Cardinals on Saturday.

He allowed seven base hits, including a solo home run by Matt Carpenter leading off the game. He notched three strikeouts and did not issue a walk in the abbreviated outing. Williams falls to 5-3 with a strong 3.43 ERA and 1.13 WHIP through 11 starts. He will have a chance to exact some revenge when he faces the Cardinals again on Thursday.
May 26 - 7:15 PM

Ryne Stanek did not allow a run or a hit over 1 2/3 innings of scoreless ball in Saturday's win over the Orioles.

Stanek struck out three in his brief time on the mound. He threw just 21 pitches (14 strikes) before calling it a day. While by traditional standards this would be a laughably short start, it makes enough sense with Stanek -- it was his first start in the majors and his first start at any level since 2016. In a small sample of 6 2/3 frames with the big league club this season, the right-hander has surrendered three runs on four hits. It has not yet been determined whether he will receive another turn in the rotation. Saturday's outing was sharp, if limited.
May 26 - 7:14 PM

Andrew Cashner surrendered five runs on 11 hits over five innings in Saturday's loss to the Rays.

The Rays got their licks in early, scoring two runs in the first inning before plating three more off Cashner in the second stanza. He would not allow another run over his final three innings of work, but the damage had already been done. The rocky outing bumped his ERA to 5.07, the highest it's been since his second start of the year. Up next on the docket, a potentially brutal home outing against the Yankees.
