Rafael Montero will make a spot start Thursday against the Padres.

May 25 - 4:17 PM

Jacob deGrom's scheduled start Thursday against the Padres has been pushed back to Friday.

With storms in the forecast for Thursday night, the Mets don't want to risk wasting deGrom's turn with an abbreviated start. Instead, deGrom will start Friday's series opener at Pittsburgh. Rafael Montero will make a spot start Thursday at Citi Field, assuming the games goes on as scheduled.

Nelson Cruz hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning to help propel the Mariners past the Nationals 4-2 on Thursday.

Cruz has been tearing it up since a lousy first week of the season, and he's taken over the AL lead with 40 RBI this year. The homer was his 12th, so he's right on pace for what would be a fourth straight 40-homer season.

Ariel Miranda allowed two runs over five innings Thursday in notching a win over the Nationals.

Miranda got the win even though Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez allowed as many runs in a slightly longer outing (two in 5 1/3 innings). The Mariners were trailing 2-0 when Miranda finished up, but they scored three runs in the top of the sixth and held on from there. Miranda has allowed four runs over 17 innings in his last three starts, lowering his ERA from 5.20 to 4.22.

Adrian Beltre (calf) played five innings of third base Thursday in his first game at extended spring training.

Beltre didn't see a defensive chance, but he did run the bases (at around 50 percent effort) while drawing two walks among his six plate appearances. He also hit into three groundouts and one flyout. Beltre is going to play two more games at the Rangers' spring training complex in Arizona before being reevaluated. If all goes well, he should be cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment early next week with an eye on joining the Rangers around early-to-mid June.

Edwin Diaz got the ninth for the Mariners on Thursday and pitched a scoreless inning with a two-run lead for his eighth save.

Diaz seems to be back in the closer's role after just two appearances since losing the job last week. He's not a sure thing at this point and it'd certainly be for the best if he could go a couple of weeks without a blown save, but especially since no one else really stepped up, it should be fine to drop any other Seattle relievers in mixed leagues.
