Giants optioned RHP Ray Black to Double-A Richmond; re-assigned RHP Clayton Blackburn and LHP Nik Turley to minor league camp.
None of the early cuts come as a surprise. Black can hit 100 mph regularly when he's healthy, but he's had a hard time staying on the field. Still, the 24-year-old could debut at some point in 2015 even though he's yet to appear above A-ball.
Yankees signed INF Mat Gamel to a minor league contract.
Gamel hasn't played the last two seasons after back-to-back ACL tears. He's still just 29, but obviously he'll need to show he can stay healthy before being of any use to the Yankees.
Sean Doolittle (shoulder) has yet to resume throwing.
Doolittle remains relegated to strengthening exercises as he rehabs a slight tear in his left rotator cuff. The A's are hoping their closer will be ready at some point in April, but obviously the longer it is until he resumes throwing, the less likely it will be that he's available that soon.
Dodgers signed C Ali Solis to a minor league contract.
Solis agreed to terms with the Dodgers in January but saw the deal fall apart due to a contractual issue. Obviously the two sides worked out whatever that problem was. The 27-year-old will serve as organizational depth.
Royals signed 1B Casey Kotchman to a minor league contract.
Kotchman, 32, sat out last season after going hitless in 20 at-bats for the Marlins in 2013. The veteran first baseman was a starter not that long ago, but he's merely organizational depth at this point.
Reds signed RHP Chris Carpenter to a minor league contract.
Carpenter, 29, spent last season in Japan. He last appeared in the majors in 2012 with the Red Sox.
Red Sox signed INF/OF Joe Thurston to a minor league contract.
Thurston, 35, spent the last two seasons in independent ball and the Mexican League. He last appeared in the majors in 2011.
Daniel Murphy has been diagnosed with a bruised right hand.
Murphy had to leave Friday's game after being hit by a pitch. It's not clear whether he required X-rays, but either way it appears he dodged a bullet. Murphy could sit out a day or two while the swelling subsides.
