Melvin Upton is hoping to shed the protective walking boot from his left foot Friday.

Upton has been in the walking boot for the last five weeks. He has a checkup with a doctor Friday. The center fielder isn't expected to be ready to play in games for the Braves until sometime in May.

Jon Niese blanked the Nationals for six innings in the Mets' 2-0 victory Tuesday.

Niese's shoulder just isn't trustworthy, but he seems to find a way to put up solid numbers anyway. He's 3-0 with a 1.65 ERA this spring, even though he admitted to fatigue in the area last week. He'll probably miss at least a few weeks over the course of the year, but he should have some NL-only value anyway.

Danny Espinosa went 0-for-3 on Tuesday, lowering his spring average to .137.

Espinosa, now exclusively a right-handed hitter after giving up switch-hitting, has looked so bad this spring that he probably won't be a part of the starting lineup even with Anthony Rendon bound for the disabled list. Most likely, he'll back up Dan Uggla at second and Yunel Escobar at third.

Andre Ethier was pulled from Tuesday's Cactus League game after getting hit by a pitch on his arm.

The ball got him near his right wrist and he looked to be in a good amount of pain. There should be an update out of Dodgers camp within the next hour.

Eduardo Escobar homered and doubled to lead the Twins to a 3-1 defeat of the Yankees on Tuesday.

Escobar isn't making things easy for the Twins. The team wants to take a long look at Danny Santana at shortstop, but Escobar was just fine as a starter there last year and he's kept hitting this spring, with four homers in 54 at-bats. There seems little doubt that the Twins would be better for the short-term by starting Escobar at short and Santana in center field. However, it is in the franchise's best interests to see if Santana can cut it at short, particularly since Byron Buxton is lined up as the center fielder of the future.

In his first start since being named the Twins' fifth starter, Tommy Milone held the Yankees to one run in six innings to win Tuesday.

He struck out five. Milone beat out Mike Pelfrey and Trevor May for the lone opening in Minnesota's rotation. He doesn't come recommended in AL-only leagues, not with the Twins sporting the AL's worst outfield defense.

Blue Jays reassigned INF Munenori Kawasaki to minor league camp.

Kawasaki hit well this spring, but he was on the outside looking in for a spot on the Blue Jays' bench. The 33-year-old will function as organizational infield depth.

Masahiro Tanaka allowed three runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings Tuesday in a loss to the Twins.

Whether he's saving it for the regular season or not, Tanaka didn't show his best velocity today. His last two outings have come in on the discouraging side, at least as far as his chances of re-emerging as one of the AL's most dominant starters this year. He's showed a better fastball when he's wanted to this spring, but it's hard to tell whether he'll be able to take good stuff to the mound every six days.
