Max Scherzer was scratched from Friday's start against the Padres due to neck soreness.

Nationals' manager Dusty Baker said it's the opposite side of the neck that is bothering Scherzer, not the same side that gave him trouble earlier this season.

Mark Melancon admitted Friday that he has been contemplating surgery.

The right-hander claims that the ligament in his elbow is fine, but the surgery would correct a separate issue that has bothered him off and on since the 2012 season. Melancon has continued to have conversations with the Giants' training staff regarding the proper course of action and Giants' manage Bruce Bochy said he wouldn't put Melancon on the mound if it meant risking further injury. It doesn't sound like he's going to have much fantasy value over the final six weeks of the season.

J.D. Martinez was scratched from the Diamondbacks' starting lineup on Friday due to illness.

It doesn't sound like anything too serious, so consider the hard-hitting outfielder day-to-day. Brandon Drury replaced him in the lineup and will bat seventh for the D'Backs against Ervin Santana and the Twins.

Matt Andriese was forced to leave his minor league rehab start on Friday after he was hit by a comebacker.

The injury occurred just two pitches into his outing when he was drilled on the left ankle by a batted ball. He'll head for further evaluation. Expect the Rays to provide an update on his status after Friday's game.

Matt Kemp (hamstring) is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Saturday.

Kemp has been on the shelf with a hamstring strain since the end of July. He'll return to full-time action in left field upon his return which could squeeze Matt Adams out of playing time in the Braves' lineup.

Jake Arrieta whiffed six across 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball in Friday's 7-4 victory over the Blue Jays.

Arrieta allowed a two-out RBI single to Steve Pearce in the top of the first inning, but he shut Toronto down after that with just six baserunners and no runs permitted the rest of the way. The Cubs' right-hander hasn't given up more than two runs in any of his last seven starts. He'll try to keep it going in Cincinnati the next time out.
Aug 18 - 6:36 PM

J.A. Happ was touched up for five runs over five innings of work in Friday's loss to the Cubs.

The Cubbies hit Happ up with a three-spot in the second inning and then KO'd him with two more runs in the fifth. Happ surrendered nine hits and two walks on the day and needed 103 pitches to get through his five frames, although he did at least throw his fantasy owners a bone with eight strikeouts. The southpaw gets the Rays next.

Wade Davis recorded his 25th save of the season with a perfect ninth inning in Friday's win over the Blue Jays.

Tasked with protecting a three-run lead, Davis shut things down with no issues by inducing a couple groundouts along with a strikeout. He's a perfect 25-for-25 in save opportunities this season.
