Eli Apple worked as a boundary corner in the Giants' first-team nickel package Monday.
With Leon Hall (concussion) sidelined, Apple worked opposite Janoris Jenkins on the outside with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie manning the slot. Considering Hall's struggles even before the injury, it could be the lineup the Giants trot out against the Cowboys Week 1. Despite a slow start this offseason, it looks like Apple will play a big rookie role.
Lions placed TE Brandon Pettigrew (ACL) on the reserve/PUP.
The veteran is attempting to come back from a December ACL tear. The move will cost Pettigrew at least the first six weeks of the season. With Eric Ebron (ankle) questionable for Week 1, the Lions are extremely thin at tight end.
Bengals released WR/KR Brandon Tate.
This is a bit surprising considering how important Tate is on special teams and the fact he worked at times with the first-team offense in the preseason, but the Bengals are clearly trying to get younger at receiver. Tate should be able to find a new home.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Chiefs have made QB Aaron Murray available for trade.
After signing Nick Foles to backup Alex Smith, the Chiefs were never going to keep both Murray and Tyler Bray. A 2014 fifth-rounder, Murray could be interesting to a team desperate for a low-cost backup. Murray will likely be waived if the Chiefs cannot work out a deal.
In a radio interview, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he is not sure when Tony Romo (back) will return.
"I just don't know," Jones said before adding it could be anywhere from four-to-10 weeks. A return after the team's Week 7 bye has been floated as the most likely scenario, but Jones said the team is still discussing whether or not to place Romo on injured reserve, which would keep him out at least the first eight weeks. Dak Prescott will open the season as the starter.
Jaguars waived DE Bjoern Werner and TE Nic Jacobs.
They also placed S James Sample (shoulder) on injured reserve to reach the 75-man roster limit. A first-round mega-bust of the Colts in 2013, Werner has recorded 6.5 sacks in 38 career games. His pedigree will likely earn him another shot, but he is running out of chances. Once thought to be a roster lock, Jacobs' release is somewhat surprising.
Jaguars placed S James Sample (shoulder) on injured reserve.
A 2015 fourth-round pick, Sample also ended his rookie season on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. It is possible he is designated to return later in the season. Jacksonville also cut TE Nic Jacobs and DE Bjoern Werner to reach the 75-man roster limit.
Cowboys WR Cole Beasley said rookie QB Dak Prescott "belongs" in the huddle.
"You can read a person's demeanor, and he commands the huddle," Beasley added. "It's the way he calls the plays and the confidence he shows." Dallas' skill players seem to trust the rookie more than they did Brandon Weeden or Matt Cassel, last year's fill-ins, and they have good reason to after a dynamic performance in the preseason. With a scheme designed to highlight Prescott's strengths, he should be able to keep the offense humming while Tony Romo (back) is sidelined.
